College Major Monday: Legal Studies. This college major is NOT the same thing as law or pre-law, but it provides students with an in-depth understanding of the legal system, including the infrastructure, the reasoning process, and the substantive commitments that the legal system has made. This is great for someone with an interest in understanding law and society but doesn't necessarily want to attend law school. Good morning! Many inquire about my approach to answering questions for various applications and requests for my CV. Happy Monday! We have another amazing intern to introduce you to. Please join us in welcoming Eric Xie to the team at SLC! Southern Legal Counsel's advocacy for the decriminalization of poverty was the primary resonation with for Eric. He "Find(s) it abhorrent that local governments would rather obscure the public face of homelessness and persecute the unhoused rather than effectuating tangible change." He also hopes to expand his exposure of law as a discipline, and had never encountered public interest legal work until learning about SLC. He thought that interning here was a natural choice to learn about the virtues of pro bono, community-oriented legal advocacy. FAVORITE PART OF INTERNING WITH SLC: By contributing to SLC's efforts to decriminalize poverty, I want to comprehend the argumentative techniques used to undermine the integrity of these unjust laws. Reading through the court opinions pertaining to this effort has taught me about the constitutional grounds that such laws are in conflict with. FUN FACT: I was born in West Palm Beach and raised in Tampa. I currently studying economics and political science. My favorite food is dumplings. FUTURE GOALS: Attempting to merge the virtues of sustainability with legal advocacy would be a fulfilling path to take. My general interest in political philosophy suggests that a concentration in constitutional law may be an apt fit as well. “I don’t have Educational bias.” I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear a client (with fantastic Big-Law & impressive academic credentials) say this, earlier in the week! It’s so frustrating when asked to limit the candidate pool to those who studied at a top law school. University choice doesn’t tell you the full story, but a good recruiter will! 😉 I often ask candidates how they picked which law school to attend, responses vary: ✏ Offered a free ride at XXX so took it!! ✏ Had a sick relative/ caring responsibility so opted to stay close to the family home. ✏ Family affiliation with XXX institution. ✏ Really liked the ethos! ✏ Strong fit with sports interests. As we keep striving for diverse teams, diversity of thought and a more diverse workforce, I hope more hiring managers see the bigger picture & stop limiting candidate pools by law school attendance. #lawschoollife #diversetalent #diverseworkforce #inclusiveleadership #recruiterlife
