Fortescue has begun works at its Green Metal Project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Located at the Green Energy Hub at Christmas Creek, the US$50 million project is expected to produce more than 1,500 tonnes per annum of green metal, with first production anticipated in 2025. The plant will use green hydrogen produced at Fortescue’s gaseous and liquid hydrogen facility, the largest of its kind in Australia, together with an electric smelting furnace to produce high purity green metal. This will be suitable for use in almost any steel plant globally. Fortescue Executive Chairman Dr Andrew Forrest said: “Iron and steel are the backbone of our infrastructure, however traditional iron and steel production processes are among the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. “By rethinking the entire iron and steel value chain we can produce an entirely new, green industry here in Australia." #manufacturing #australianmanufacturing #asx #iron #steel #greeniron #decarbonisarion #mineralprocessing

𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲'𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 /𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻 Fortescue's strategic shift to green iron production is a bold move that could position the company for long-term success. However, the viability of this initiative will depend on a complex interplay of market forces, technological advancements, and regulatory support. Fortescue's strategic pivot towards green iron production is a calculated response to several factors: 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆: The diminishing demand for steel in China, coupled with increasing iron ore supply from new mines, has created a challenging market environment for iron ore producers. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Fortescue's attempt to move downstream into green iron production is a strategic maneuver to reduce its reliance on the volatile iron ore market and capture additional value along the supply chain. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The company's investments in green hydrogen and ammonia projects were driven by the global trend towards decarbonization. However, the economic realities of the iron ore market, which was the main revenue source for the forced company, have forced a reassessment of these ambitions. The announcement of a green iron project, despite the challenges faced by Fortescue's previous green initiatives, suggests several potential outcomes: 𝗛𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: By investing in green iron production, Fortescue is positioning itself to benefit from potential future trends in the steel industry, such as a resurgence in demand for low-carbon steel products. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The use of electric smelting furnaces to process low-grade iron ore could represent a significant technological advancement, enabling Fortescue to remain competitive in a changing market. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: The green iron project aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainable practices in the mining industry. By investing in this initiative, Fortescue can enhance its reputation as a responsible corporate citizen. However, the future of Fortescue's green iron venture will depend on several factors: 𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 #greensteel #industrialdecarbonisation #greenhydrogen #climatechange Link :https://lnkd.in/dr2JUhK3
