Housed centrifugal fan can come in many discharge positions. The discharge positions should be matched with the duct connection and the straight section required for duct connection is the equivalent length of the duct. When fans are mismatched with duct connection, you will get noise, inefficiency and performance issue. So housed fans are good if you have determine your discharge position and can have the straight duct section required, as they are cheap. However, nowadays I would prefer to use plug fans either EC motor or vsd inside my AHU as they are more flexible for connection and require smaller compact space as no additional diffuser section and plenum section is required for any direction of discharge.
