People - we all have got to start SOMEWHERE! Hiring teams have lost sight of what an internship actually IS. It's NOT... a... job. You want an intern? That means YOU have to work. This is your opportunity to give back and teach. Sure the intern can -and should be of help and service. BUT, that student is YOUR APPRENTICE. Teach them what to do. Mold them on the ways of work. The most fulfilling thing I’ve done in my career - by a long shot- is help young people get a strong start in life. I’ve had OVER 100 interns and I get enormous joy from each of their achievements. In a few days we’ll launch our application for Summer ‘24 interns, I can't wait!! We hire engineers and fabricators, designers and videographers - and I do mean HIRE, they are well paid - across all the areas of the company. Our interns are responsible for clearly defined projects and they learn how to be part of a high achieving team. But many of the interns, years later when I run into them at an airport or restaurant, say that it was the weekly “career skills” sessions that they benefited from and enjoyed the most. During intern season, we have a different guest speaker who shares their knowledge on essential skills: How to job search, how to write professional emails ("not texts?"), real business ethics, how to interview well, how to set up their professional profile, and even how to shake hands professionally (shockingly few 18-22 year olds know how). It takes some work to prepare for and manage the interns, but they deliver far, FAR more than they “cost”. Attention students who are on the Summer internship hunt: Today I spoke to a finance manager at a fortune 100 who is hiring a handful of summer finance and accounting interns at the undergrad and mba levels. A key skill that you might highlight is your ability to work independently. Not just remotely, but independently. Can you think of a few examples when you needed help over the last couple of years ? On a project or in a class - and did you ask right away ? Be honest with yourself. Or did you put it off until the week of the midterm exam to ask for help (like most students) ? What did you learn from that? Demonstrate that you know when to dig in and get work done. And when to go ask the boss for more work. Especially ask for help on the work tasks not completed yet. Bottom line: demonstrate being proactive. Don’t wait to the last minute to seek help. I’ve never had an unpaid intern in my entire career trajectory of being a fashion business owner and an online entrepreneur. And I’ve hired over 50-60 interns atleast. When I was just starting out, and I could not afford assistants for exhibitions and shoots, I still paid the people for their food + commute + any other expense they might have incurred. I was 22 and I had the decency to do it because I know what it felt like when people made you work for free, blocked you after the work was done or treat you not like a human. So, I detest it when BIG corporates and small ones do it in the name of exposure. Hear me out kiddo, if they are saying it’s “exposure”, it’s them bloody lying through their teeth. They are not hiring you to do you a favour. They are hiring you because they want free labour. Big corporate giants are supposed to lead with example and unfortunately I see them exploiting students time and time again! It’s not cool. If you are worth it, they will pay. Also, atleast ask for ₹5-10k MINIMUM as an intern depending on if it’s your first one or second one. This is stuff no one tells you. Don’t let them fool you.
