For decades, the Indigenous communities of the Malaysian peninsula have struggled without access to basic needs that require state recognition. Formal education, a stable occupation, and recognition of ancestral land rights, to name a few, continue to be a challenge for the Orang Asli in the 21st century, making them highly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Exclusion not only prevents Indigenous communities from the progress they so desperately need, it also means nations miss out on valuable intercultural dialogues for #sustainable solutions with those who hold a deep connection with the land. On the heels of the recent World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, we revisit a major milestone in cultural recognition: The ‘Indigenous Communities in Malaysia: Reframing the National Sustainability Initiative’ Convention, hosted by the RYTHM Foundation together with the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) back in 2023. Joined by Yayasan Sime Darby, Quest International University (QIU), Universiti Teknologi MARA, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Ilmu Khas (a teacher training campus for special education needs), and the Malaysian Orang Asli Graduates Association, this event resulted in over 30 resolutions being adopted to address the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in the Malaysian peninsula. As the highly vilified resort in Chocolate Hills, Bohol, Philippines continues to draw flak amidst its controversial existence (let alone the shenanigans that led to its establishment despite presumptive policies and regulations ought to be in place), the words in the image below couldn't be more resounding, in this era of "progress for the sake of progress." Whatever happened to preserve what must be preserved, and prune what ought to be prohibited? Such line of thought is transferrable to the way we lead our lives or practice our professions in whatever industry we thrive in.
