Conflict and displacement has devastating consequences for individuals and communities. In Sri Lanka, the decades-long civil war violently drove thousands of people from their homes; among them were young Radeesh and his family. On the #InternationalDayOfPeace, we revisit the story of Radeesh, how he was finally reunited with his family, and how he built a new life through a RYTHM Foundation-funded project with LEADS Sri Lanka in Mullaitivu, northern Sri Lanka: https://lnkd.in/g2ChpXHY Conflict continues to ravage different parts of the world even in the present day, displacing thousands of people like Radeesh and his family. We hope that more people can find it in their hearts to pursue peaceful dialogue and forge a unified path forward. 🙏🏽 #RiseWithRYTHM #EndConflict #Peacebuilding #CommunityDevelopment

In Sri Lanka, coastal areas ravaged by the 26-year long civil war continue to face environmental issues to this day. The mangrove forests that protected the Sri Lankan coastline have dwindled, negatively impacting the ecosystem. Mangroves are critical to mitigating erosion and have historically provided a certain degree of defence against storms and tsunamis. To restore the coast of Sinna Karachchi to its former glory, we partnered with the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur and Trincomalee, Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretariat, the Department of Forest Conservation - Sri Lanka, and the Department of Coastal Conservation in a mangrove-planting initiative that spanned several months! What does it REALLY take to transform communities for the better? 🧐 RYTHM teammate Nurdiana Ismail reflects on her work with the marginalised Indigenous Dusun, Bateq, and Kensiu of Malaysia, and the steps she took to address challenges and drive progress! 💪🏽 #RiseWithRYTHM #IndigenousRights #CommunityDevelopment #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork
When I joined RYTHM Foundation in 2022, I was given the responsibility of overseeing the Community Adoption Programme (CAP), a project focused on uplifting and empowering the indigenous communities in Malaysia. I didn't know what to expect initially, but I was aware that many of these communities faced marginalization, and many are still denied basic rights and opportunities as fellow citizens of Malaysia. Coming from a background of certain privileges, I was worried about being disconnected as a non-indigenous person managing projects for Indigenous communities. Despite these concerns, I was determined to confront the challenges directly and make the best of it. Therefore, I made frequent visits to interact with different indigenous communities, read numerous research papers and articles, and engaged with like-minded individuals. For that, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to gain insight into the issues and challenges faced by our indigenous communities. This has enabled me to slowly begin understanding what needs to be considered in designing a suitable approach for intervention for our beneficiaries. Witnessing the aspirations, challenges, and successes of our beneficiaries from the Dusun ethnic group in Sabah, the Bateq community in Pahang and the last remaining Kensiu tribe in Kedah was a humbling experience for me as a human being. What I learned is that while it's important to learn about accountability in project management for the social impact field, it's equally important to approach this work with compassion, and understanding the human element. Two years later, I still see myself as a beginner with much more to learn. This post is two weeks overdue, but happy Indigenous People's Day! May the voices of Indigenous Peoples continue to inspire positive change.
