A new Greenpeace Africa and Greenpeace غرينبيس report shows six of the world's 10 largest nitrogen dioxide emission hotspots are in Africa. Pollutant emissions in Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa led to a considerable number of premature deaths, with the highest mortality linked to fossil fuel air pollution. The study suggests that life expectancy could be improved by up to 3 years in some African nations if air quality met World Health Organization guidelines. Exposure to air pollution is the second leading risk factor of death in Africa, and the air quality monitoring network needs to significantly expand across the continent. #airquality #airpollution #emissions #africa Greenpeace

Kenya annouces a public holiday for tree planting The Kenyan government has declared an unexpected public holiday on November 13, marking a nationwide tree planting day as a key element of its ambitious initiative to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. With Kenya's current forest cover at approximately 7%, the government has allocated over $80 million in the current fiscal year to elevate this coverage to over 10%, emphasising the business commitment to environmental sustainability. This decision aligns with the global imperative to combat climate change, recognising the pivotal role trees play in carbon sequestration. Notably, the government's proactive stance aims to mitigate the impact of the climate crisis, particularly the prolonged droughts affecting the Horn of Africa, including Kenya, where five consecutive seasons have witnessed rainfall failure. 🌍 Communities in Africa are paying the price for the climate crisis Floods, droughts, heatwaves, and rising sea levels are devastating our communities, and the most vulnerable—women, children, and the elderly—are bearing the brunt. Yet, the wealthiest polluters continue to profit while doing little to address the crisis. We need urgent, coordinated global action to reduce emissions, scale up climate finance, and ensure a just transition to clean energy. It's time to hold those most responsible accountable and fight for a sustainable future for Africa. #ClimateJustice Sign our petition: https://lnkd.in/dNA6xDJr

Let's honor the incredible beauty and immense value of Africa’s seas and oceans. The Africa Day of Seas and Oceans is more than a celebration; it's a clarion call to action. Our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, providing vital resources, regulating climate, and sustaining diverse ecosystems. They are crucial to the livelihood of millions of Africans, offering food, jobs, and a source of cultural identity. Yet, these invaluable waters face unprecedented threats. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change are endangering marine life and the communities that depend on the ocean. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard this blue treasure for future generations. As professionals and leaders, we must champion sustainable practices, support marine conservation efforts, and innovate for a blue economy that balances growth with ecological stewardship. Let's leverage our expertise and influence to advocate for policies that protect our marine environments and promote sustainable use of ocean resources. Today, let's reaffirm our commitment to preserving Africa’s seas and oceans. By working together, we can ensure a thriving, sustainable marine ecosystem that continues to support and inspire us all. Share with me your thoughts on how we can work together to protect our oceans. #AfricaDayOfSeasAndOceans #sustainabledevelopment #marineconservation #blueeconomy #protectouroceans #environmentalstewardship

This water kiosk shouldn't be the norm. Water scarcity, worsened by climate change, is a crisis in north eastern communities and beyond. It's time for action. The Kenya Government in collaboration with county governments must do more than just provide temporary solutions. Let's advocate for policies and investments that ensure clean, accessible water for everyone, regardless of location or circumstance. Last mile water connection needs to be the main agenda. #waterislife #waterscarcity #climatechange #policychange #sustainabledevelopment
