In January 2024, Greenwood Sustainable Infrastructure (GSI), in partnership with Ocean Man First Nation, announced the award of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SaskPower to construct and operate the 100-megawatt MWac utility-scale solar facility in Saskatchewan, Canada. Once constructed, the project, Iyuhána Solar, will be one of Canada's top 10 fully contracted solar facilities by size. GSI, through our ongoing dedication to sustainability and our goal of building strong communities around our projects, has made numerous commitments that benefit the local community, including investments in education, research and innovation, employment, and support for the Ocean Man First Nation band. Iyuhána Solar has allocated $40,000 in funding to support the Southeast College Saskatchewan Centre of Sustainable Innovation, to be located a short 20 kilometers from the Project site. The Centre will work to advance the development and diversification of Saskatchewan’s Southeast region’s economy and create the skilled workforce needed to support the renewables industry in Saskatchewan. Additionally, Iyuhána Solar has established a $10,000 scholarship for students at Southeast College which will be awarded annually, beginning June 2024, and continuing over the operating lifetime of the Project. GSI, through Iyuhána Solar, is proud to work closely and support these important endeavours at Southeast College and the Centre for Sustainable Innovation. Passionate Renewable Energy Advocate | Seeking to Drive Sustainable Change Through Innovative Solutions
Shall we move to Heat Pumps? As Australia shifts towards sustainable energy solutions, it's critical to balance enthusiasm for new technologies with the practicalities of current infrastructure. While high-temperature and steam-generating heat pumps offer notable efficiency, our immediate focus should lean more towards decarbonising gas and enhancing our grid's capacity. Concerns About Heat Pumps: Grid Capacity: The existing electrical grid in Australia may struggle with the additional demand from heat pumps, potentially causing reliability issues and necessitating costly upgrades. High Initial Costs: The significant upfront costs and the requirement for retrofitting existing systems render high-temperature heat pumps less economically viable at present. Advocating for Gas and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG): Immediate Decarbonisation: Using renewable natural gas can immediately reduce emissions utilising existing infrastructure, offering a pragmatic bridge towards cleaner energy. Industrial Heating: Gas boilers are currently more effective for industrial applications, providing the necessary high temperatures efficiently. Integrating RNG could substantially lower their environmental impact. Pros of RNG: Environmental Advantages: RNG significantly reduces carbon emissions and utilises existing gas networks, avoiding the hefty costs of new infrastructure. Cons of Heat Pumps: Performance in Cold Weather: The efficiency of high-temperature heat pumps can decrease significantly in colder climates, necessitating additional heating and increasing operational costs. Long-term ROI: Despite potential savings over time, the considerable initial expenses and limitations of the current grid make them a less appealing option in the short term. While heat pumps represent a forward-thinking approach to heating, they require more substantial infrastructure support to be viable. Prioritising the decarbonisation of gas, particularly through the use of RNG, and strengthening the electrical grid should precede their widespread adoption. This strategy ensures immediate environmental benefits while preparing Australia for future energy demands.

Elements Green’s Staythorpe 360MW/720MWh BESS Project Secures Planning Consent. We are very pleased to announce that our Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in the UK has reached a significant milestone and has now received planning permission. Following a positive ruling from the Planning Inspectorate, we have secured planning consent. The target energisation date is set for August 2026, with the project having an operational life of 40 years. With a 360 MW peak and the capacity to store 720 MWh, Staythorpe BESS will supply approximately 150,000 households. The project is expected to prevent around 1.8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over its 40-year lifetime, which is comparable to taking 37,500 cars off the road. Our Executive Chairman, Mark Turner, commented, “Securing planning permission is a remarkable achievement for our team. We are preparing to begin construction and bring our vision to life, creating not only a state-of-the-art energy storage solution but also making a positive contribution to the local environment with additional planting and the creation of a permissive path. Through its connection into the existing national grid substation at Staythorpe, the project builds on the Trent Valley’s long history of powering the UK." Staythorpe BESS is not just about energy storage; it also includes several features aimed at enhancing the local environment and community, including: ✅ More than 12 acres dedicated to landscape planting, woodland creation, and wildflower meadows. ✅ Planting of 129 trees. ✅ At least a 25.7% Biodiversity Net Gain. ✅ Creation of a new permissive footpath (over 500 meters). ✅ Creation of 30-50 high-skilled jobs during construction. ✅ A community benefit trust that will contribute to energy bills for households within the parish. “This achievement is a testament to the dedication and exceptional expertise of our UK development team”, explains Mark. “We are excited about the future and the positive impact this project will have on our organisation and the broader community. The UK Government has set ambitious and legally binding targets to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050. More renewable energy is needed to fast-track away from fossil fuels, and energy storage and large-scale solar development are recognised as having an important role in achieving this.” The approval of the Staythorpe BESS project underscores our commitment to delivering innovative energy solutions that contribute to a sustainable future for communities across the UK and beyond.
