I started in Sales (aka Recruiting) at age 37 knowing I better figure this out pretty quick. There was a guy in our San Diego office, Dave Bakkeby, who was a legend in our company on what he did as an AE. He was the Regional Manager at the time having been promoted, but I figured I better call him to pick his brain. Why not right? He told me something I will never forget. "Read the industry news that your clients are in for 30 minutes per day." I was like "That's it". That's the advice? You want me to read for 30 minutes? He laughed and said try it for 30 days and see what happens. I did and as you would expect I learned the industry terms. Upstream, midstream, downstream for my Oil & Gas folks. I learned the major players and the companies looking to make a splash. I learned the issues the industry was facing or who just launched a new product. I was on the phone and I threw out a piece of news I just read on a cold call and the conversation switched immediately. I was all of a sudden an industry expert in the eyes of the person I was calling! Little did they know I was day 27 into this new routine. I did not stop reading for 30 minutes per day on the industry where the majority of my clients played in. That piece of advice pushed me to President's Cub for 3 straight years and I think gave me the confidence to launch my sales career. I am not sure I really thanked Dave for that even though we worked several national accounts together and drove hundreds of hours across TX and OK. Read for 30 minutes per day on your target market's industry and you will see a dramatic shift in your conversations. Sales network! Exciting opportunity! #Hiring A friend of mine is the CEO of Plantd and is looking to hire two BDRs & an AE right now. They are a Series A company gearing up for Series B and need to focus on generating sales pipeline. For these roles they are looking for callers to manage their inbound sales pipeline as well as do outbound dialing. The salary is competitive with industry standards, there is an option to work fully remote, or have a hybrid schedule if you are NC based. The positions are full-time, include benefits, stock options, and the travel costs to meet clients and come into the office will be covered. A lot of flexibility here. Their product is great and is a disrupter in the industry. “We are inventing a new way to solve climate change by building a factory of the future that locks away carbon in the production of a new durable building material made from grass instead of trees—called Plantd materials.” They just closed an $8.5 million dollar deal, and have an existing pipeline they are trying to close, as well as build the top of their sales funnel. We all know there’s a lot of volatility in the wood industry with prices and with a shortage of building materials. Builders feel this pain heavily. Heck, I felt this during Covid trying to order that new bed frame and it taking more than 6 months to get to me! The benefit of working for Plantd is that there’s an incredible market to tap into. You get to source and sell multi-million dollar sized contracts, and you can feel good about doing it by helping the Earth to keep spinning & reduce climate change. I believed that sales was: - Cold calling - Door-to-door selling - Convincing people to buy things they don't need Turns out I was wrong. As a founder, whether you like it or not, you're the company's first salesperson. What I found in B2B sales of life science products is that most of the time it is really about: - Listening to scientists and engineers - Learning about their applications - Solving technical problems together Yes, prospecting is part of the job, but it's still better than running Western blots.
