Changed locks? Shut off utilities? These kinds of tactics to remove a tenant without getting the court's approval are illegal in almost every state. But a Business Insider investigation into these illegal evictions or lockouts found complaints were up in cities across the country. An eviction with no notice is extraordinarily disruptive. People risk losing their jobs, children can fall behind in school, and families strain their budgets with unplanned expenses. Our investigation unearthed hundreds of cases in which data shows that the police did little to nothing when answering emergency calls for help with an illegal eviction. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH – SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE Yesterday, our office in Hervey Bay was attacked by a young woman, clearly under the influence of drugs, who is currently out on bail and supposedly being monitored by an ankle bracelet. Despite this, she stormed into our workplace, verbally abused my staff, locked herself in a room, and even tried to escape by smashing through the ceiling. This terrifying event should never have happened in a place of work. My team is understandably shaken. While I can’t speak highly enough of the police who responded brilliantly – the real problem is the system. This woman had been wreaking havoc around businesses and private homes for days. Why wasn’t she locked up before this happened? Why do we allow criminals to continue their rampages, terrorizing communities while out on bail? As the owner of Win Projects, we have had enough. Just this year alone, we’ve lost over $400,000 in stolen excavation equipment, experienced vandalism on job sites, theft of materials, and graffiti on our business signage and windows. Despite reporting everything, we haven’t been compensated a single cent for the damages, lost trade, or theft. Worse still, there has been no confirmation that anyone has even been prosecuted for these crimes. The laws are too weak, and the courts seem more focused on protecting the rights of criminals than the safety of the general public. I don’t usually make political statements, but crime is one of the biggest issues facing Queensland this election, followed closely by health. As a business owner and a resident of this community, I will be basing my vote on who I believe is tougher on crime and committed to real change. This isn’t just about yesterdays attack – this is about the constant threat businesses and residents face daily. 🔍🔐 A Day in the Life of a Dedicated Detective Team 🔐🔍 Today, our incredible team of detectives embarked taking on a on a high-risk domestic case with a time critical PACE custody time limit, and I couldn't be prouder of their unwavering commitment to protecting the vulnerable. It was a challenging day, but we managed to secure a superintendent's extension and authorized a Domestic Violence Protection Notice (DVPN) to ensure the safety of the victim. While the day demanded our full attention, I must acknowledge that a few members of our team were unfortunately late to a social event tonight. As a tight-knit unit, I value camaraderie and understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance. As detectives, we recognise the critical importance of teamwork and collaboration. The successful outcome of today's operation would not have been possible without the collective effort and support of each team member. We work cooperatively, sharing knowledge, skills, and resources to achieve the best results for our community. In our line of work, critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure are paramount. We constantly analyse information, weigh the pros and cons, and refer to procedures and precedents, ensuring that our actions align with our mission, values, and the Code of Ethics.
