Most people know me as an enthusiast, but there's a quiet sceptic below the surface, too - particularly in relation to company's claims about environmental performance. Yesterday, I visited the most remarkable, advanced producer of green energy, Fleetsolve, courtesy of another born enthusiast, its CEO Keith O'Connor. Its technology is already transforming the environmental performance of asset managers and estate owners, from supermarket chains to large university campuses. Does good governance stifle or support innovation and growth? The key, in my view, to ensuring that it does the latter lies in ensuring that the chosen governance arrangements are appropriate. A principle that is true for all organisations, not just fast-growing tech start-ups. Contrary to what some may think, governance is not about layering an organisation with irritating bureaucracy, it is about putting in place a framework which enables a business to identify, and then be steered towards, its goals with appropriate safety rails in place. It can, in some ways, facilitate delivery at pace. By ensuring that new ideas in a highly innovative environment are properly assessed before they are implemented, misplaced over-enthusiasm can be prevented from creating unhelpful distraction from the ultimate objectives of the business so as to maintain the laser-like focus needed to deliver on ambitious targets. Governance is, unfortunately, sometimes seen as a checklist and this undermines its true potential to craft individual and thoughtful solutions to support achievement and delivery with well-understood risks and controlled risk taking. The governance that is appropriate for an established successful business is unlikely to be the best option for a high-growth early-stage entrepreneurial one. It is a great shame if some of the highest potential businesses on the planet are rejecting the opportunity to innovate in their governance as they do in their product offering. #CorporateGovernance #ESG #GovernanceForGood #InnovationInGovernance
