We were pleased to be able to attend the NZ Airports Associations https://lnkd.in/fDNye8Z first ever Regional Airport Summit last week held and Auckland Airport. The Regional Airport Summit saw participation from CEOs and representatives, engaging in discussions on barriers and enablers for airport network development. It was initiated in response to a government call for collaboration for economic growth. The importance of connectivity for economic growth was emphasised, with a focus on policies, regulations, and relationships driving better outcomes. Hon Simeon Brown, Minister of Transport, joined to hear practical ideas and case studies. Key themes included fostering an enabling attitude within government agencies, addressing vulnerability to the national carrier's strategy, assisting with aviation security, managing urban encroachment, and transitioning to zero emission flights. Three main actions were identified: engaging with smaller airlines, organizing a study tour to Australia for knowledge sharing, and leading the development of airport network scenarios for emission-free flight.

Airports Council International (ACI) World has today published the latest #ACI World Airport Traffic Dataset, confirming the top 20 busiest airports in the world in 2023. The biggest jump in the top 20 rankings was recorded by Seoul Incheon International Airport. The airport improved its ranking from 99th position in 2022 to take 20th spot in 2023. The dataset’s key findings confirm total global passenger traffic for 2023 was close to 8.7 billion, driven by a continued resurgence in international traffic. This segment was propelled by several factors, including the anticipated benefits from the reopening of the Asian markets and a growing inclination towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions. https://lnkd.in/g3e8kz6v

Amidst the closure of Atatürk Airport in 2019 and the subsequent near-complete halt in air traffic caused by the pandemic, TAV Airports faced significant financial strain with daily cash burn. Despite these challenges, TAV acquired its first and only perpetual airport investment in Almaty, Kazakhstan—a financial and industrial hub with growing natural tourism prospects. This investment presented an opportunity to expand TAV’s footprint in a new region. The HBR 2021 case study captured this critical juncture, highlighting the decision of whether to proceed quickly during peak uncertainty or risk missing out on a promising opportunity. The acquisition has now proven to be a strategic success for TAV Airports. Almaty International Airport serves as Kazakhstan's main international hub, connecting 26 passenger airlines and key trade routes between China and Europe. Despite the pandemic, Almaty Airport's operational performance has been robust, with a significant increase in passenger and cargo traffic. In 2023, the airport handled 9.5 million passengers, a 49% increase from 2019. The planned expansion, including the new international terminal, is set for completion and will more than double its capacity, positioning it for future growth. Almaty's strong financial performance significantly contributed to TAV's overall success, with Almaty alone generating €406.1 million in revenue and €88.1 million in EBITDA in 2023. This investment not only strengthens TAV's footprint in a new region but also underscores its resilience and strategic foresight. https://lnkd.in/dciueAZn #TAV #ALA #AlmatyInternationalAirport #AIA
