A crucial challenge in aquaculture is sourcing cost-effective and protein-rich alternatives for aquafeed. This challenge has added salience given the strong projected growth of aquaculture to meet the protein needs of a growing population which will doubtless be underpinned by expanding aquafeed supply. A new report by 1000OS member Hatch Blue with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation makes a helpful contribution to bridging the protein gap in aquafeed. The report identifies 9 leading candidates with at least 50% crude protein and a realistic scaling potential. It serves as a useful guide for investors and innovators alike interested in trends and areas for further development, barriers to the adoption of new ingredients and the strength and weaknesses of leading alternatives. Aquaculture🐟 is facing several challenges, including the need to be environmentally and economically sustainable. The optimisation of specially formulated diets to meet the specific needs of farmed shrimp and fish, together with the quality of raw materials and ingredients used in the production of aquaculture feeds, requires special attention from producers, as their quality and efficiency are closely related to performance. In times of fishmeal and fish oil scarcity and increasing use of vegetable meals, innovative solutions have been transforming shrimp and fish production: the use of #nucleotides-enriched diets. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) can up-cycle sludge from salmon aquaculture and convert it to raw materials for aqua- and livestock feeds ♻. Aquafeed news: "Study: Aquaculture ‘making clear headway’ for alternative feed ingredients but scalability remains a challenge" The review considers a large variety of protein sources used in aquafeeds, including: - Marine ingredients, which are produced from either forage fishery or byproducts from both fishery and aquaculture resources. - Processed animal proteins, made from terrestrial animals produced for human consumption from which byproducts are generated, as well as insect and worm meals. - Single-cell protein resources, produced from bacterial, yeast, fungal or microalgal origins. - Grain protein sources, which make up the largest volume of all global aquafeeds. These include cereals, oil seeds, pulses, including those plant resources, used either unmodified or with varying degrees of processing.
