🌏 The GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index (MCI) measures the performance of 173 countries against key enablers of mobile internet adoption: infrastructure, affordability, consumer readiness, and content and services. The goal of the MCI is to empower the mobile industry, governments and the wider international community to deliver on the ambition of universal access to the internet. Data from the latest MCI update reveals that the countries whose mobile connectivity scores have improved the most over the past five years are: Bahrain, Brazil, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Niger, Uzbekistan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Start exploring the MCI to see how your country is performing against these key enablers ➡️ https://ow.ly/7opk50STZyj ▶️ Watch the full webinar recording to explore the latest MCI trends, gain valuable insights into the countries making significant progress in #MobileConnectivity and learn how to utilise this data to inform policies decisions and drive digital inclusion: https://ow.ly/hwA550STZyh #MCI #DigitalInclusion #DigitalDivide #connectivity #MobileInternet #mobile #MobileConnectivity #UKAid #Sida

The Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24), currently being hosted in Uganda from 1st to 4th July, marks a pivotal moment for the country's ICT sector. This prestigious event gathers approximately 800 delegates, including leading telecommunication regulators, policymakers, and industry leaders from around the world. Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), GSR-24 focuses on advancing regulatory practices in the digital age under the theme 'Regulation for Impact'. This event not only underscores Uganda's emergence as a leader in ICT within Eastern Africa but also highlights its commitment to fostering global dialogue on crucial issues such as consumer empowerment, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. What are the opportunities ? 🤔 - Economic Growth: Leveraging ICT advancements can stimulate economic growth through enhanced digital services and improved business efficiencies. - Knowledge Exchange: Learning from global best practices and experiences can help Uganda refine its regulatory frameworks and policies. - Innovation Hub: Establishing Uganda as an innovation hub for ICTs could attract foreign investment and spur local technological innovation. What are the Challenges 🤔 ? Infrastructure Challenges : Ensuring broadband access and ICT affordability remains a challenge, hindering widespread digital adoption across Uganda. - Resource Constraints : Limited resources may restrict Uganda's ability to implement ambitious ICT initiatives discussed during the symposium. - Skills Gap : A shortage of skilled personnel in advanced technologies like AI and robotics may slow down the pace of technological advancements Hosting GSR-24 is a significant milestone for Uganda, aligning with its strategy to leverage ICT for economic growth and societal advancement. The symposium provides a platform to address key challenges and capitalize on opportunities in digital transformation. Moving forward, Uganda must focus on bridging infrastructure gaps, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and building human capital to fully realize the benefits of ICT innovation. As an up and coming technological innovations hub in the region, it is indeed pertinent for all industry professionals and related agencies (in Uganda's ICT sector)to continue engaging stakeholders both locally and internationally to streamline and promote seamless connectivity and productivity (sustainably) in the ever growing (and evolving) national and global digital landscape. #ITUGSR #DigitalTransformation #UgandaICT #DigitalInfrastructure #DigitalEconomy

Listening to discussions on DPI at #ID4Africa2024 highlights a critical problem with this new development poster child. No one (funders, government or private sector) is aligned at a basic level on the definition of DPI or its vision. This creates the very real risk of having all key stakeholders pulling a thread in different directions resulting in confusion and mixed messaging (which we are currently seeing), conflicting strategies and inefficiencies across board with a lot of duplicating effort. As Nanjira Sambuli highlighted, the excitement around DPI might overshadow the existing efforts governments have made in digitalization. Does DPI then build upon existing work or render it irrelevant? How DPI is defined, designed and implemented matters. For Africa, the reality is DPI can't be divorced from issues like energy & the "last mile" connectivity challenge of remote areas. Without nuanced contextualisation of the challenges and inequalities on the continent, the concept of leapfrogging will remain a myth. It's also critical to remember within all the jargon that tech is a solution/enabler not a magic bullet. Beyond definition, effective DPI implementation requires addressing policy, governance, investment, and infrastructure issues.
