OPINION by Jeff Rice: State education policies should be changed to allow public charter schools with flex-based hybrid programs that operate facilities for instruction to qualify for funding for facilities and after-school programs. Policies should also be changed to allow more students at traditional schools to take part in flexible independent study programs so that they too can benefit from a more tailored and adaptable education program.

Last month, Ary Amerikaner and Rucker Johnson released a new paper “Reclaiming the Promise of Brown: The Integration of Desegregation & School Funding Reform.” In the paper, they explain, “The best available research evidence provides support of the pursuit of a holistic set of policy reforms that rethink how we assign students and resources to schools if we are ever to achieve equal educational opportunity that prepares all students to thrive in a multiracial democracy.” At ERI, we affirm the need for law and policy reform around school funding and assignment so that each and every student across our nation can access a high-quality education. Improving student outcomes and addressing talent supply challenges, including educator supply, education is a priority to grow MI. As a result, it’s a key political issue. We at MAPSA hear from the MI charter sector that charter public schools can be the catalyst to drive broader education forward in personalized learning, in multiple pathways, in reimagining the role of the educator, and in what accountability means and looks like. Michigan charter schools are bucking trends, academic performance is up, enrollment is up, and the public and educators continue to support charter opportunities. But what about the politics of education? This article asks an interesting question: how can charter schools have a political future?

BREITBART: LOUISIANA BECOMES FIRST STATE TO REQUIRE TEN COMMANDMENTS TO BE DISPLAYED IN PUBLIC SCHOOL CLASSROOMS … Louisiana has passed legislation requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms, including state-funded universities. Efforts to restore the commandments to public schools also are active in other states, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Utah … The Supreme Court recently ruled that the Ten Commandments “have historical significance as one of the foundations of our legal system” and represent a “common cultural heritage.” The bill further states that “Recognizing the historical role of the Ten Commandments accords with our nation’s history and faithfully reflects the understanding of the founders of our nation with respect to the necessity of civil morality to a function self-government” … The bill also allows, but does not require, the display of Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, and the Northwest Ordinance. The bill mandates that displays be paired with a four-paragraph context statement, in which the Ten Commandments are described as “a prominent part of American public education for almost three centuries.” Public school classrooms from kindergarten to universities must have the displays no later than January 1, 2025.
