What does #home mean to you? This World Refugee Day, we asked friends, colleagues, refugees and displaced people from around the world this question and received some powerful answers. Ones that resonated most were the importance of home in preserving memories, feeling safe and being close to loved ones. It’s an important reminder that the concept of ‘home’ looks very different around the world and changes are often not made by choice. Refugee (noun): Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their home countries due to war, persecution or natural disaster. For the hundreds of refugees we serve each year, it often looked like running from violence with nothing more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind everything and everyone they knew and loved. While millions of refugees have been displaced by unrest from around the globe, today the vast majority of resettled hail from just three countries: 1️⃣Afghanistan 2️⃣Syria 3️⃣Ukraine After government-sponsored resettlement services end (sometimes after only 90 days), the real challenges of building a new life often begin. Friends of Refugees’ “wrap-around” approach embraces each refugee family on the path to long-term success as American citizens. Even better – more than half our staff comes from refugee and immigrant backgrounds, so we understand the refugee’s unique challenges and how to overcome them. It's often thought that refugees only stay in camps for a short time. 🌍 #AlightResolvingMyths: Most refugees live outside camps, integrating into urban areas or resettling in other countries. On average, they spend 10-15 years in refugee camps, while some may be displaced for the rest or a significant part of their lives. ⛺ Alight creates systems and structures for camp residents to participate in decision-making and daily life. 🌟 Learn more at wearealight.org. #LearnWithAlight #WorldRefugeeDay #Refugee #CampLife #Cocreation

Join us in watching this powerful video showcasing the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees. Despite challenges, they rise above adversity, rebuilding their lives with an unwavering spirit. This video is a part of a series of videos produced by the Refugee Readiness Team at the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria. We invite you to listen to these stories of the hosts and landlords of Vancouver Island who shared their experience of hosting and renting to refugees. These videos are a testament to the fact that renting to refugees is a rich and rewarding, experience that brings diversity and togetherness into our community. We extend warm gratitude to those who contributed their stories and allowed us to create these videos. Your experience is incredibly valuable in breaking down housing barriers and encouraging more landlords to consider renting to refugees. By sharing these stories, it is our wish to encourage homeowners to learn about the importance of welcoming refugees into our communities and the positive impact they have. Hope you enjoy these stories as much as we did. Want to learn more about the work we do?
