Employers often think it’s harder to hire someone with a mental illness than a physical one. In fact, 44% of employers worry about hiring someone with a mental illness for a production job. The stigma is real – but Support from a vocational rehabilitation professional can help overcome it and build your path to the workforce, even if you’ve never worked before. The stigma is real, but unfounded: The vast majority of employers ultimately say they’re glad they hired someone with a disability. Global Atlantic Fellow, Chief Executive Officer & Founder - Nōna Te Ao Charitable Trust, Project Manager - Te Ara Tauhokohoko
Finally, I’m able to go back to work!!! From 14th October, I am officially medically cleared of post-concussion, as well as being fully healthy for the first time in my career! This means that I can finally go back to work 🙏🏾 I think honesty and transparency is extremely important, and man… Finding work after finishing up, while on ACC has been tough. As someone who has lived with an invisible disability, it has been so difficult to experience the stigmatism I have when rejoining the workforce. Interviews have been as follows: - I am constantly doubted. As in, I get a whole bunch of questions asking me about how I will cope and do I think that I could maintain this role with my ‘issues’? As someone who worked their entire career and achieved everything that I have through hiding this part of me away, this really stings. I’m better than I have ever been and am fully healthy for the first time in my entire career, but the stigma is tough… - When applying for local roles I have been told I’m too experienced and in one instance was told that I would be perfect for director, but the current director doesn’t want to work with you because they’re worried I will intimidate them? As a 6ft 2 Brown Giant, being intimidating is my worst fear. - The interview turns into them wanting to talk to me about my previous work, then I am told that the role would be too small for me and they’re worried that I would be bored… This is the first time in my life I’ve had to really apply for roles, which is a privilege in itself. It just makes me think about all our whaikaha whānau and others who have suffered long-term injuries and how bad their experiences must be. Anyway whānau, I am currently working as acting Chief Executive of Nōna Te Ao Charitable Trust, as we expand across multiple regions in 2024! This is the dream and I am super thankful to be able to live it! Downside of it is we are a charity who literally gives everything to our rangatahi, so I’m keen to pick up a couple of contracts on any kaupapa where you feel I could bring my expertise to keep me sharp, but also to allow me to financially continue to be the Chief Executive, while we grow our funding to be sustainable. If anyone is keen and want to give me a chance to prove my worth, I’m ready, willing, and incredibly able. Just need someone to take a chance on me to let me show what I can do 🙏🏾 The picture below is me post-surgery after I got the gastric sleeve last week. I’m coming into my healthy era after over 10 years of sitting at 200kg+! If you thought what I’ve done already has been good, wait until you meet healthy Sammy! I haven’t seen him in about 10 years, so I’m also excited to see what we can achieve 💙 #InvisibleDisabilities #HealthAndWellbeing #imback #equity

Passionate law enforcement professional dedicated to driving innovation, embracing change, and achieving success through continuous learning and adaptability.
I can’t wait for where I am headed. I plan to be a clinical mental health counselor that specializes in trauma in first responders. My dream is to open a non-profit where I can offer counseling for free to police, dispatch, and firefighters. I just finished my first semester of Graduate school with a 4.0 GPA. I can’t wait for the small things, like being off during the holidays, seeing my family more often, and being able to go to the bathroom when I please. There are so many things that individuals take for granted. Out of the last five Thanksgivings, I’ve spent 4 of them alone at the console. While it just so happens that I got the last few Christmases off, I almost never get to spend it with family. Working in public safety can be exhausting, draining, and a lot of us suffer burnout very soon into our career. Two things that I will never forget: 1. Where I came from 2. Who helped me get here Starting a new career is scary, but I can’t wait to see the changes that it brings to my life. Will I not have to worry so much about money? Will get weekends to myself or have the choice to work four days a week? Will I be happier? Will this be the best way to help others? Most of all I pray to God that all this hard work is worth it, because I am exhausted. #newbeginnings #newcareer #whoshiring #giveyourselfgrace

We are pleased to report such fantastic results since our #ValueofYou project launched in June 2022. Nearly 200 people took part in our employability course, which was made possible from a grant made by The Life Rooms. Those who were part of the project received both group and one-to-one sessions based around confidence boosting and removing barriers to employment. A review of the success of our project has shown: ⭐28 people are now employed, ⭐17 have gone onto education or training, ⭐16 people are now volunteering, ⭐47 are actively job hunting. Providing access to confidence coaching is invaluable to those suffering from a neurological condition. Living with limitations can result in depression, anxiety and a lack of self esteem which can provide obstacles when looking for work. The Brain Charity worked with a variety of partners to help promote the sessions, including Job Centre. Jenny, a Disability Employment Advisor at Job Centre, said: “The Value of You has been very beneficial for our customers that attended. It has supported a lot of people to move forward which can be very difficult due to not realising their potential and value. The project has enabled participants to become more self-aware and knowing of their own strengths.” Read more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/e_B33irx

Did you know that in the USA there is a celebration for Military Spouses - they publically thank them for their service....sadly, in the UK we could not be further away from this! This is particularly frustrating given the desire for companies to diversify their workforces across the UK! The Armed Forces Covenant is a great initiative which many companies have bought into - we are one of those companies and we are really trying to make a difference. Part of the reason I am so passionate about supporting UK Spouses is my own lived experience and let me tell you, it hasn't been an easy ride juggling ambition, career development, moves around the country and raising three children. Out of sheer annoyance, I began trying to help Spouses and connect them with meaningful employment and careers so that they don't have the impending doom of career suicide and a loss of their identity as a byproduct of their partner's careers through my networking group. Slowly but surely we are identifying businesses who are truly interested in exploring this robust, qualified and (dare I say it) most adaptable individuals amongst talent pools - but we are not there yet! That said, many companies are still not prepared to support individuals in their careers when they move with their partners - MADNESS! Here are a few stories just in the last 2 weeks alone: - One Spouse who was instrumental in helping the company gain status on the Armed Forces Covenant was told she had to leave if she was moving with her partner (the job is an easy switch to remote first so we are clear). The following week, the same company asked her if she would do a piece for socials on the support they offer to the Armed Forces ??? >>>>Insert shock here - Another Spouse who was working for a company at GOLD standard at a senior level across technology was told her move would be too complicated to facilitate. However, she was all told that she was pivotal in the success of her team >>> Insert Explictives here - Another Spouse moved with her partner who was then sent overseas, leaving her alone with a young child, no childcare options and knowing hardly any people. Qualified as a Data Analyst for many years, she was then put in a position where her company decided to bring people back on site several days a week >>> insert anger here It is tough enough to pick up and move with a smile and a wave without having the carrot dangled thinking that the Armed Forces Covenant will make everything better - it is making inroads but merely dents in the side right now! So, if you are a company that is remote first, or perhaps offices around the country and wants to hire some brilliant individuals across Technology, Finance, Cyber or HR then please drop me a message. I cannot tell you how demoralising it is for these people when the only roles they are being offered are customer service remote options that they are a) highly overqualified for and b) don't offer any career opportunities!

Headway responds to changes to the Work Capability Assessment. Reported changes to how people are assessed as being unfit to work due to illness or disability have been met with alarm by Headway, the UK-wide charity that supports people affected by brain injury. The proposed changes to the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) could see many more people assessed as fit to work and threatened with cuts to their benefits if they did not actively seek work, according to Headway. Those receiving WCA monies are placed into one of two categories: either having “limited capability for work-related activity” if in receipt of Universal Credit or the support group if they are also receiving Employment and Support Allowance. Proposals include these categories being scrapped, with work coaches in Job Centres determining how much effort people need to make to find a job. Read more:
