Today being Social Mobility Day, I think it's important to highlight the importance of social mobility and the impact it can have on young people. Every young person deserves equal access to opportunity and there are so many amazing organisations trying to bridge that gap for the young people who don't have that access. Career Ready being one of them, as it is an amazing charity that helps underrepresented young people with access to career support through mentorship, paid work experience and work-place visits. Social mobility can improve the lives of so many young people by giving them access to mentorship and opportunities in sectors they may not have realised were a possibility and it's something we need to continue to champion for all those young people that aren't already aware. #CareerReady #YAB #ShareMoments #SocialMobilityDay

2023 has been a tough financial year for many charities, including Astriid. However, as we sign off for the festive season, we’re reflecting back on some real wins and accomplishments we’ve made over the last twelve months. Read the full piece on our website! We have continued creating informational content and downloadable resources for individuals with long-term conditions, and provided consulting and eLearning courses to many high-profile organisations to help them better understand the unique challenges that individuals with LTCs face in the world of work. We supported the Flexible Working Bill which reached Royal Assent this year, and in a Parliamentary briefing for Invisible Disabilities In Education And Employment, we saw the phrase ‘Energy Limiting Conditions’ used for the first time – a huge moment for the one in three disabled people in the UK impacted by these conditions. We also released our Making Employment Work research report, which shares valuable insights into the barriers that individuals face in work along a life-altering health condition. We are so proud of this piece of work and how it has been received. After the announcement of devastating changes to essential ‘Fit To Work’ benefits, we used our platform to oppose these changes and provide individuals with tools to raise this with their local MP. We have now also had the opportunity to meet with Sir Stephen Twigg and Kit Malthouse, reflecting both sides of the political spectrum, to discuss these changes and share insights identified from our research and work on the frontline. Our team will be taking some essential rest over the festive season and into January (with minimal social media monitoring over this time), before turning our focus to the New Year. We’re working hard to bring back our candidate support offering in 2024, while continuing to consult with organisations and advocate for change on a broader scale. Thank you so much for supporting us this year – have a lovely festive season, and we’ll see you soon! Exploding brand visibility for entrepreneurs and businesses | CEO at Moja | Chair at Smart Works Newcastle | Author | Speaker | Columnist | NED | Investor | Podcast Host - Beyond the Bio
What does having a job mean to you? For Smart Works clients, having a job provides a sense of purpose and identity. I imagine it’s the same for most of us. I know I wouldn’t be me without my work. The Smart Works Charity Unemployment Index launches this morning. It’s the second year of the index and an important one for us in Newcastle, as we have data that specifically relates to the North East. Reading our data is sobering: 34% of our clients are solo parents (the national average is 23% according to Gingerbread). Our average client age is 38. 16% identified as having a disability. Our clients applied for an average of 33 jobs without finding work, and 40% had been out of work for over a year. So, when people ask how I find time to commit to chairing this awesome charity, the answer is this: 67% of clients supported by our centre in Newcastle went on to secure a job within a month of their first Smart Works appointment. 67%! How bloody epic is that?? Helping women secure work and changing their lives for the better motivates me like nothing else and inspires me to keep doing my best. That’s why I love volunteering with Smart Works Newcastle so much! Pic - reps from Newcastle at the House of Lords launch this morning, including Collay, cover star of the report and one of our very own clients 💙 #UnemploymentIndex
