Some thoughtful insights!
Last week (Feb 1) marked my third full year at Morning Brew. 3 lessons from 3 years: 1. Commit to the bit — During the interview process for my first role (community manager), I created an entire Notion page on how I would onboard the community, community principles, merch roll-out, onboarding form, a welcome video, etc... It wasn't asked for, but I wanted to try and stand out & I loved the work so it actually was a lot of fun. At the risk of being overzealous, I wanted to make it clear I really wanted this specific role at this specific company. Sometimes this strategy doesn't work out, but I'd rather do everything in my power to demonstrate who I am and let the company determine if it's a good fit or not than to wait and pray. 2. Cold & thoughtful DMs are a game changer — We booked a ton of amazing guests for all of our events. You'd be amazed at how receptive experts or biz leaders are when you craft a thoughtful DM or email and actually demonstrate you've engaged with their work. One of my favorite's was Claire Hughes Johnson. I read her book Scaling People and was blown away; so I emailed her all the things I wanted to talk about & she agreed to do an interview IRL in the Morning Brew studio. It was a career highlight! The internet has made reaching basically anyone possible. You're one well crafted message away from a great connection. 3. Context & fit is everything — Over the last 3 years, I've interacted with thousands of professionals. It's been a real unique insight into a lot of different job titles, functions, and people. This has only solidified my belief that people who are wildly successful have found great fit; and those that aren't, just haven't found fit yet. If you're able to really articulate what makes you unique, then you will be successful if you can identify contexts or environments where that uniqueness is a super power. It's easier said than done; but I think it gets you out of black and white thinking (I'm a great worker OR I'm not a great worker) and helps you recover from setbacks faster (it's not that you're bad, the situation is just not the right fit for you). Here's to the next 3 years!

ONE MORE FOR THE SUMMER — NEWSLETTER Summer 2024, hit different! Professionally, it came in waves. There were several highs and lows. Neither one too far from home base and equally as meaningful as they were learning moments. Personally, it was emotional (in a good way). More on that later. For now, I wanted to take pause in expressing gratitude as I reflect on another eventful and FUN summer — and share a few key moments and highlights that reflect the mission of TE&Co. to get people excited and in the know about what YOU are working on. Summertime slowdown...where? On the drive home from Costco a few days ago, I was reflecting on all the events and outings I'd been on in the last 3 weeks. I wondered what proportion of those were career-related, and so I figured I'd share a quick summary below. I was surprised to see that the split was relatively equal between my 3 categories of career (networking & development), social (outings with or initiated by friends) and personal (things my partner and I put on the agenda). 📊 If I was more inclined, I might look at assigning 'level of effort' ratings to each, to see which one had the most drain on my relatively introverted brain; and duration, to see where my time was spent the most. Alternatively, I could look at the time series overall to determine where the peaks and valleys of my events were. 🤷♀️ The chart does little to show the nuance within days, the side of desk tasks or the everyday errands; but it was fun to consider how I maintain a work-life balance, and made me proud of all the time I put toward professional development and nurturing relationships. 🗝 What's your split? 🤔

Today I had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by Futures Friends. One of the topics that came up was the concept of Rewarding Retail and the potential of retail workers providing head office with first-hand insights into the day-to-day life in the store. The discussion also considered the empowerment of retail workers, engaging them and showing both on a personal and business level the importance of staff working directly with customers. Fellow retail friends, how do you feel about this? Do you feel heard by your company? Do you feel your input is taken into account? Do you feel head office decisions are sometimes disconnected from the reality in the store? In my experience in different retail environments, I feel that the opinions of sales assistants are often not taken into account, resulting in many lost opportunities. I would venture to say companies spend more on mystery shopper feedback and other tools than on actually listening to their employees.

Have you ever found your true calling in the most unexpected places? For CEO John Gualtieri, he thought accounting was his path, until one retail job changed everything. In the work that we do, many people starting in their careers want to know what it takes to be successful. Our paths to fulfilment often take unexpected turns. What can we learn from embracing unconventional opportunities that may reshape our professional journeys in profound ways? I had the chance to ask John Gualtieri, CEO of Kmart and Target, about his journey, and it was incredibly insightful. No matter where you are in your career, John’s words can really be valuable. Here is a 24-second video. The link to his full interview is in the comments below. #Rezilium #CareerGrowth #PersonalDevelopment

It's so important in place marketing to take the time to involve your stakeholders and to bring the community along. Too often do we see people wanting to launch a brand, a website, a campaign quickly with limited research and feedback....and almost always when they do that, something comes back to bite them. This is also coming from someone who likes to activate, so I get the need for speed, but sometimes slowing down reaps larger rewards (which is probably a good motto for not just place marketing, but life in general;). #econdev #economicdevelopment
It was awesome to be among 250+ storytellers, marketers and creative professionals representing communities and destinations doing great work at City Nation Place in #Houston this week! In addition to partnering with Patience Fairbrother on a talent attraction roundtable and releasing DCI's Talent Wars report, I left feeling so inspired about place marketing and the work that we do at Development Counsellors International. Here are just a few of my favorite takeaways. #CNPAmericas24 #econdev #destinationmarketing 1️⃣ Your brand is not your logo. You must answer who you are and your brand ethos first. 2️⃣ Slow down and do the research. Know that it takes time to listen to your community, talk with residents, partners and stakeholders, and understand outside perceptions. 3️⃣ Your story must be based on authenticity. Your actions create your narrative. Find authentic creators and storytellers within your community and partner with them. 4️⃣ People support what they co-create. Make sure to involve your stakeholders, community and partners. They will then become your community's best ambassadors and cheerleaders. 5️⃣ Collaboration is worth the effort. Building trust among your community partners takes time. Lean into what you're good at and allow partners to bring their strengths to the table too.
