Retail has been reinventing itself for a while now, and one might even say it is more of a reincarnation post-Pandemic. This Atlantic piece highlights an over-the-top Bass Pro Shop. #Consumers want something consumable or experiential when they venture into a #Retail establishment. This could be #samples or a #demonstration. It might also be an in-store only gift with purchase (that is how #POPshelf got me to put on shoes and get in the car to drive 1.2 miles - well-played) Or in the case of Bass Pro Shop, it could consist of being whisked away into a parallel universe, an adventure of sights and sounds.

Back in June, TampaTomorrow reported that Dick's Sporting Goods would be relocating from West Shore Plaza to International Plaza, noting that the plans seemingly pointed to Dick's opening their House of Sports complex. Today, those plans are confirmed! Renderings from other locations are shown in our blog post below when the rumor first appeared. Dick's will open this concept in space Life Time Fitness previously occupied. The House of Sports concept combines the traditional retail shopping with experiences including rock climbing, golf simulation bays, and multisport cages for customers to try out gear. This is how an investment in tech can save money and time

Made a whirlwind trip to nyc this weekend for the US Open (tennis, not golf - I prefer sports, not hobbies 😀). Bucket list awesomeness, but I suppose that’s for another social media platform that I’m not on. Anywho… made it into the new On store in Williamsburg. It’s a humble, pocket-sized store, but really well done. What’s to love? 1 - They invested at the product level. Don’t get me wrong, the space is nice and all, but the attention to detail at the fixture and merchandise level is what sells. Oftentimes too much puffery in the store design can detract from the product itself. 2 - People power. They have some badass associates working there. Peeps that know their product, love the brand, and are super personable and helpful. 3 - They intelligently considered operations. Those slide out shoe fixtures with sample sizes at the ready mean the associate is never leaving the customer during the sales process and creating an easier (and better) process for guest and associate. 4 - No screens. Well, actually, there were 3 tiny screens for info level, but they weren’t working (shocker, I know). 5 - They had some nicely integrated eco and performance oriented storytelling that added to the experience but didn’t overpower. It feels like On is finally starting to crack the nut on creating the right experience and design for expansion. *For tennis enthusiasts* I got the chance to see Ben Shelton best Tommy Paul in an incredible match, and Coco Gauff pull it out against Caroline Wozniacki - all while sipping on a Grey Goose Honey Deuce. They had more disposable income, so they bought $5,000 fishing kayaks like the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14. “Where does that leave us for an upgrade?” John said. “That’s part of the saturation problem.” Such a valid point. If possible, brands should be designing and building systems that are modular and can scale equal to where the consumer is in their outdoor journey while staying one step ahead of them ready to meet them again at their next growth stage of experience. New Product Innovation and Design has to be thinking how to strengthen the consumer/retailer relationship, this is 2024, think versatility, longevity, multi-functionality…think platform.
