Today is Stop Food Waste Day. Food waste is a global issue with 33% of all food produced being wasted annually. Almost 50% of all fruits and vegetables produced annually are wasted, this is equivalent to about 3.7 trillion apples. If 25% of the food currently lost or wasted were saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people. We speak a lot about our partnership with FareShare UK and recently shared that we have extended that partnership and increased our fundraising target which is now to fund the equivalent of 275,000+ meals every year! FareShare UK is dedicated to fighting hunger and food waste and believes that no good food should go to waste. As part of this commitment, they redistribute surplus food to charities that turn it into meals for those facing food insecurity. In 2022-23, 91% of food FareShare UK provided was surplus that otherwise would have gone to waste. This equated to 54,000 tonnes of food. 8,500 local charities were served and over 1 million people received food as a result of their work. We have big plans as part of our partnership with FareShare UK and will continue to help support them in tackling food waste. #FareShare #tacklefoodwaste #stopfodwasteday #foodwaste Sources: https://bit.ly/3W8bOUu https://bit.ly/4aHkRjR

To end hunger in Australia, we must end food waste. It’s hard to believe that Australia produces enough food to feed everyone three times over, yet last year 3.7 million households struggled to put food on the table. Clearly, something needs to change. At Foodbank, we believe food belongs in bellies, not bins. That’s why we’re dedicated to reducing food waste while helping those in need. Last year alone, we sourced 92 million meals – a win for both people and the planet. 🌱 But we know Australia’s food system must change to end hunger and waste. That’s why we’re advocating for a National Food Donation Tax Incentive, a policy that could unlock an additional 100 million meals each year by 2030. This smart, simple solution encourages farmers and small businesses to donate surplus food, reducing waste and feeding those in need. We’re calling on the Australian Government to take action. With millions of Australians struggling with the cost of living crisis, there’s never been a more urgent time for change. #EndWaste #FoodWaste #EndHunger #Sustainability #NationalFoodDonationTaxIncentive #InternationalFoodLossAndWasteDay

This past weekend was the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction, but the opportunity to take action is ongoing. Food retailers can still make a significant impact by adopting these strategies: Key actions: - Boost food donations by creating a clear list for employees to help divert perishables past labeled dates (e.g., seafood diverted within 2 days of Use By date, milk donated within 5 days of Sell By date). - Increase food waste diversion by ensuring each department has easy access to organic waste collection bins. - Forge local partnerships with food banks, shelters, farms, and bioenergy facilities to keep food waste out of landfills. What is the difference between Food loss and Food waste? Food loss happens when food unavoidably becomes unfit for human consumption before people have a chance to eat it. It’s most prevalent in lower income countries when food is unintentionally damaged or destroyed by pests or mold. Food waste happens when we discard food that’s still fit for human consumption, either before or after it spoils. It happens most often in high-income countries at restaurants, hotels and homes. -World Food Program USA According to US Food and Drug Association, in the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30–40 percent of the food supply. Fight food waste by supporting local food banks like us through volunteering and donations. Visit heartofcompassionca.org now!

Foodbank Australia has released its 2024 Foodbank Hunger Report, which reveals the findings from their recent Hunger Survey. This report sheds light on Australia’s hidden hunger crisis, detailing the scope of food insecurity across the country, who is affected, and the reasons behind it. We are a proud partner of Foodbank in #Australia. Through our in-kind donation of reusable equipment including pallets, bins and reusable plastic containers (RPCs / crates), we support Foodbank and our customer donors move much-needed food through the supply chain to feed those experiencing food insecurity and hunger. 🌱 Food Waste: Reducing Waste, Increasing Profits 🍲Food waste is a major problem for restaurants. Wasting food means wasting money. It can also harm the environment. Managing food waste is crucial for both profit and sustainability. To reduce waste, track your inventory carefully. This helps you order only what you need. Teach staff to be mindful of portion sizes. Controlling portions reduces the likelihood of food waste. Consider donating excess food to local charities. This helps those in need and reduces waste. You can also repurpose leftover ingredients in new dishes to minimize loss. By focusing on reducing food waste, you can save money and improve your restaurant's reputation. Customers appreciate businesses that care about the environment. Make waste reduction a priority today for a better tomorrow. #FoodWasteManagement #Sustainability #RestaurantProfitability #WasteReduction

Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Members of the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance contribute to reducing food loss and waste by rescuing surplus food and distributing it to people in need. Without food rescue, far more food would needlessly end up in landfill. Food going to landfill is a massive environmental, economic and social problem. We generate a lot of carbon emissions producing our food. We also use a lot of non-renewable resources like fertilisers that present their own issues like waterway degradation. Those problems need to be solved for producing the food we eat. But they are made worse by the fact about a third of all food produced never gets eaten. We damage the environment purely to produce waste. No one wants that to happen. Growers, farmers, NGOs, scientists, government agencies and others are all working hard to make food production more sustainable. And while projects that may have promise in the future are worked on, food rescuers like Kaibosh Food Rescue are getting runs on the board now by making sure food that is produced gets eaten. Plus they are helping get food to people who need it. So today, let’s reflect on what we need to do now and in the long-term to reduce food loss and waste and build a food production system that can continue to feed future generations.

🌍 World Food Day: A Moment for Reflection and Action On October 16th, we observe World Food Day, raising awareness about global hunger and food sustainability. In 2023, between 713 million and 757 million people faced hunger, and over 2.8 billion people couldn’t afford a healthy diet in 2022. Even in the EU, many struggle with the rising cost of food. At the same time, food waste remains a pressing issue—132 kg of edible food per person was wasted in the EU last year. To combat this, the EU is working toward ambitious targets to reduce food waste and promote food donations. 🫵 What can each of us do? We can make small changes: reduce food waste at home, donate to local food banks, and choose sustainable food options. Together, we can make a difference! 🔗 Check out infographic to learn more. https://lnkd.in/eTprAtrA #WorldFoodDay #Sustainability #ZeroHunger #FoodWaste #TakeAction

This week is Food Waste Prevention Week🥕 Food waste is a HUGE problem in the U.S. and the world—according to the USDA, an estimated 30-40% of food that is produced gets lost or wasted before it is consumed! This occurs at all levels, from farms, to wholesalers, to retail, and in our own homes. Meanwhile, thousands of people in our communities are going hungry. The good news is that we can all make a difference. At MVM, rescued food is our primary ingredient source. This means that we are able to intercept perfectly healthy foods before they are discarded, turn them into yummy meals, and re-route them to people who need them. On average, an MVM meal is made with 91% rescued ingredients. Each year, we save 130,000+ pounds of good food from going to waste. You can #BeAFoodWasteHero too by: 🥕Volunteering at a rescue kitchen (like MVM), food bank, or food pantry 🥕Encouraging food businesses to donate their excess food 🥕Being thoughtful and intentional when grocery shopping and meal planning to prevent excess waste in your own home 🥕Spreading the word about local food rescue programs and the issue of food waste What is your favorite way to reduce food waste at home or in the community? #FWPW #FoodWastePreventionWeek #foodrescue #nonprofit
