In June of 2021, Canada – along with the other G7 countries – committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It is an audacious goal, one that affords Canada with an opportunity to play a leadership role and become the first of the G7 to reach net-zero emissions. It’s a long way from where we are at the moment. Currently, says Janette Jackson of Foresight, “we’re in last place, which accelerates our need to step up the pace and position Canada as a force of nature on the path to net zero.” Over the past decade, Foresight has worked relentlessly toward making net-zero a reality. Foresight has a 10-point approach to accelerate research and development in clean tech, build regional clusters and host events. Jackson says, “We’re creating the ecosystem that fosters investment in world leading companies that are serving a social purpose, that being achieving net zero by virtue of the products and services they produce and provide.” On February 6, Foresight is hosting “CityAge Vancouver: The Urban Zero Challenge.” We invited Jeanette Jackson to join us for Conversation That Matters about the opportunities and challenges ahead for us on our path to greenhouse gas reduction. Our CEO in Hempel A/S, Michael Hansen, is at Climate Week in NYC to talk about the role of coatings in reducing carbon emissions. Approaching decarbonization, we often talk about addressing the main sources of CO2 in our upstream supply chains, like steel. However, we also need to look towards what can help reduce our own scope 1+2 emissions. Our coating systems protect precious assets, reducing the use of steel and other raw materials or saving fuel use. Check out the summary of the keynote below to see what this looks like for Hempel - including our work on supplier engagement for scope 3 reductions. Collaboration across the full value chain is our way forward.

The European Council just published the strategic agenda for 2024-2029, with a vision to make Europe more free and democratic, strong and secure, and prosperous and competitive. On the topic of green transition, the path to climate neutrality by 2050 is confirmed, harnessing ‘the potential of the green and digital transitions to create the markets, industries and high-quality jobs of the future.’ A just and fair climate transition is pursued, accelerating the energy transition, which will require ‘ambitious electrification using all net-zero and low carbon solutions, and investments in grids, storage and interconnections.’ To increase real income and purchasing power, a more circular and resource-efficient economy will be developed, referencing clean technologies, the bioeconomy and clean and smart mobility. While a competitive, sustainable and resilient agricultural sector is promoted, nature will continue to be protected, degradation of ecosystems reversed and water resilience strengthened. Nearly 10,000 stakeholders from various sectors convened at London Olympia for Innovation Zero 2024, the UK’s largest net zero industry event. This assembly included experts, professionals, politicians, and innovators united in addressing climate change through discussions on policy, investment, clean technology, and low carbon solutions. 🌍 TIME IS RUNNING OUT 🌍 We choose earth. Do you? Decisive action is urgently needed to mitigate climate risks that threaten the very existence of humanity. Since the 1970s, we've strived to balance economic growth with environmental concerns, leading to the pivotal Paris Agreement of 2015. Yet, as we approach 2030, many goals remain unmet, despite looming deadlines. 2023 marked the hottest year on record, disproportionately impacting the Global South and the world's poorest and most vulnerable. But even amidst these challenges, there is hope and inspiration. Net zero pledges have sparked a wave of low-carbon solutions and new markets. More countries, regions, cities, and companies are committing to carbon neutrality targets. Zero-carbon solutions are becoming competitive, now representing 25% of emissions. And we are all more conscious and informed about the challenges. However, we can do more. Key takeaways from me included the need to utilise what we already have, to make climate action accessible across all countries and continents, and to think beyond our own backyard.
