Today, I strongly believe that Indigenous Peoples' Day should be a recognized day off for everyone. After all, this is Native land. As we celebrate the rich histories and cultural contributions of Native Americans and Indigenous communities that have existed here on Turtle Island since Time Immemorial, it's crucial to recognize the importance of this day, beyond the closure of banks and post offices, and what’s his name. Today is also a reminder of the need for reconciliation, justice, and actionable equity. It’s also a day for reflection, family time, rest and connecting with nature. Indigenous Peoples' Day offers us a moment to pause, honor, and deeply appreciate the enduring legacy and resilience of Indigenous communities. It's a day to champion economic investment, environmental protection, and the preservation of Tribal Sovereignty, among other crucial endeavors. Let’s envision a future where this day is recognized as a state and federal day off, dedicated to honoring the original stewards of this land and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. We are almost into the half of the UN decade of ecosystem restoration...the nature decade that promotes restoration of our degraded ecosystems. What have you done to restore the ecosystems around you, that have been destroyed? To maximize the restoration impacts, everyone should be included. Inclusion is not just about giving people an opportunity to participate but also recognizing the richness that diversity brings to our communities and collective restoration plans.
