Call for applications! Imagine Nonviolence: Close the Gap is a new effort by the Health Foundation to support firearm safety or gun violence prevention programs that are funded in part by local, state, or federal government. IN will provide grants of up to $5,000 to supplement public funds to help increase program effectiveness and reach. Our goal is to learn alongside community partners, find cost-effective ways to improve outcomes, and share what we learn with government funders. Define your purpose and focus on that. Be person centred in what you do. We all have a part to play in our biggest issues for a better community.
Well done
A project set to change lives 🏠 We’re transforming a council building into 50 new apartments for Melburnians experiencing homelessness, in partnership with the Victorian Government, Unison and philanthropic organisations. Make Room will help break the cycle of homelessness through a housing-first approach, with wraparound support from cohealth. As National Homelessness Week comes to a close, explore the project on Melbourne News: https://bit.ly/3WIMljf

Collective action can lead to change. We’ve seen proof of it right here at FIRST UNITED. Just last week, the government announced proposed amendments to the Residential Tenancy Act—addressing many of the issues and some of the suggested solutions outlined in our law reform platform. We consider this a win, not just for FIRST but for the one million people who rent homes across BC! But this couldn’t have been done without the hundreds of people who shared their eviction stories for our BC Eviction Mapping research. Or the hundreds of people who signed our petition to the Housing Minister. Or the donors who made this work possible. A small action by multiple individuals can make a great impact! Will you be part of making a change? Join us and hundreds of others by making a gift to support our life-saving programs this April. Give today at https://lnkd.in/g2-tN8ZB. We need to raise $50,000 by April 25 for our life-saving programs. Will you help us reach our goal? Click the link to see our progress. #DTES #CollectiveAction #BCEvictionMap

As of August 1st, around 43% of ARP-HCY funding remains unused. With the September 30th spending deadline fast approaching, “There is real urgency to maximize the use of these funds for children who have very significant needs,” shared SchoolHouse Connection Executive Director Barbara Duffield with Education Week. “We know that the numbers [of homeless students] are going to show an increase. Homelessness is actually higher now than it was before the pandemic.” 🚨 Use our ARP-HCY Quick Spending and Cost Guide to help maximize impact of these one-time funds! 👉 https://bit.ly/3V5WZQq 🔗 EdWeek article: https://bit.ly/3AqFALG

💡🏡 Communities are making progress by working differently. They define success by whether homelessness across their entire geography is being reduced, not whether individual programs are performing well. Local nonprofit and government agency staff work as a team toward the single goal of reducing homelessness. They know — by name and in real time — all those experiencing homelessness. This clear, comprehensive view allows them to see quickly what policies and investments are leading to success and to focus on what works. #HomelessnessIsSolvable Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WD6gSc.

The Salvation Army Silicon Valley continues to innovate and address the needs in our community! We shared with Mayor Matt Mahan our Phase II (or Grass Lot) project. We are going to leverage our existing property to add more shelter space using temporary facilities for 10 years: - About 75 beds - To be used when we are remodeling Emmanuel House - Will continue to be a sober living environment - Will continue to provide overnight and transitional services - Will leverage our existing staff and our 60 years of programing expertise - Will continue to operate on private funds - $6 million dollar project - Santa Clara County will identify $4 million - A private donor will provide $1 million All we ask of the City of San José is to help us navigate the entitlement processes and for $1 million. I cannot think of a better investment into the community right now than The Salvation Army. We have the property, we have the expertise, have the 140 years of history in San Jose and we have the motivation to change lives. Let's make this happen! #innovate #unhoused #marginalized #foodinsecurity #doingthemostgood #disruptiveinnovation

I was on a call this week with a large nonprofit that said even the most compassionate donors and volunteers expressed a growing impatience—they want homeless people gone immediately. As visible homelessness increases, so does the flood of media coverage, intentional propaganda, and misinformation aimed at stoking public fear. This has led to a disturbing shift in public sentiment: the overwhelming desire to simply make homelessness disappear, regardless of the human cost. This is now the most significant driving force behind public attitudes toward homelessness. We have failed to properly educate the public on the realities of homelessness and the humanity of homeless people, and we are now witnessing the consequences of that failure. We continue to believe that we can change minds through statistics and empathy. It's clear we must rethink our approach to public communication. We need to critically examine what we’ve communicated in the past and why it hasn't worked. We must invest in strategies that resonate with today’s culture and effectively reach the hearts and minds of the public.

Affordable Housing Friends ... Starting in 2020, the Federal Reserve System has conducted surveys to better understand the range of challenges facing low- and moderate-income communities resulting from COVID-19 pandemic. While we are no longer in the midst of the pandemic, lower income and under-resourced communities continue to face many obstacles. The need to better understand these challenges and those faced by organizations – like yours, or ones you may know – serving these communities is still crucial. Please take a few minutes, about 15, to complete this survey for the Federal Reserve to help them better understand the challenges faced by your nonprofit and the community you serve. #LMI #affordablehousing #affordablerental #affordablehomeownership #housingchallenges https://lnkd.in/gPfanBib

Homelessness can be a vicious circle. And many people can be released from homelessness for good with really quite modest cash grants. Find out more about how Greater Change does this: https://lnkd.in/eKcMBxHS
We caught up with Leigh two years after he received a grant from Greater Change, which allowed him to fund his rental deposit and purchase essential furnishings for his new flat. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Leigh and Coraline are settled into their new home and he continues to sustain his move out of homelessness!
