Dr Maureen Mwanawasa, Zambia’s former First Lady, a dedicated leader and humanitarian profoundly impacted Habitat for Humanity Zambia. She joined Habitat for Humanity Zambia's Board of Directors in November 2020 as a Board Member, and her passion and dedication to our cause were evident from the start. In just over a year, she was promoted to the position of Board Chairperson, a testament to her exceptional leadership skills. Her commitment to humanity did not go unnoticed, and in March 2024, she was appointed to represent our Habitat for Humanity Africa Region on the Habitat for Humanity International Board of Directors. Maureen's passing is a great loss to Habitat for Humanity Zambia, housing sector, and Zambia, but her legacy will continue to inspire us to carry on her mission of building safe and affordable housing for all. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time. May her memory be a blessing to us all. #habitatmourns #zambiamouns Habitat for Humanity Africa Habitat for Humanity International Maureen Mwanawasa

Today marks the first anniversary of our #HomeEquals campaign! Over the past year, 45 policy or system changes have been successfully enacted at both local and national levels, and 3 million people living in informal settlements have gained improved access to adequate housing. In Macedonia, Habitat for Humanity Macedonia's efforts have aided in transforming urbanization and energy efficiency in marginalized areas like Kumanovo and Shuto Orizari. Through local advocacy, we unlocked USD $25,000 in government funding to support sustainable urbanization, land tenure security, and slum upgrading for over 20,000 people in a community with high levels of informality. Meanwhile, in Jordan, Habitat for Humanity Jordan is preparing to tackle the urgent challenges facing residents in Palestinian refugee camps, where the infrastructure is rapidly deteriorating. Collaborating closely with local partners and communities, we aim to enhance the safety and security of these homes, ensuring that every family can live in dignity and stability. Together, let’s keep pushing forward to ensure that everyone has a decent and dignified place to call home. 🏠

🌱 Nurturing Connections: Sustainable Development for Ethiopia 🌍 ✨ Today, we're highlighting the pivotal role of our Community Development Facilitator, a true bridge between our project and the community. 🙌 Not only is our facilitator educated and skilled, but they are also a valued member of the very community they serve. Living at the heart of the community, they are always accessible, fostering strong connections and trust. This unique position allows them to deeply understand local needs and ensure that sustainable practices are embraced and implemented. 📸 In this photo, you see our facilitator, Bishaw Hunegnaw, in action—organizing and leading discussions with key stakeholders, including government officials, religious leaders, and elders. Their dedication ensures that the voices of the community are heard and that our project goals align with local values and aspirations. 🌿💧 By working closely with both the community and our head office, our facilitator helps build a unified vision for a sustainable future in Ethiopia. Together, we're ensuring that every resource, from water to land, contributes to a thriving ecosystem for generations to come. 🤍 This project could only take place thanks to the generous support of our donors, Ville de Genève, EA Foundation, CARBOGEN AMCIS, and Commune de Chêne-Bourg. #SustainableEthiopia #CommunityLed #CommunityEmpowerment #EthiopianInitiatives #SustainabilityInAction #WaterPlantsAnimals #EmpoweringCommunities #SustainableDevelopment

Local resource mobilization is hindered by specific socio-economic and cultural barriers. In various communities, significant untapped potential exists within local networks and business ecosystems. Yet, civil society organizations often face challenges in effectively harnessing these resources due to inadequate capacities. ⁉️ These challenges include a limited understanding of local economic dynamics, minimal engagement with local enterprises, and insufficient cultivation of a culture of philanthropy at the grassroots level. Furthermore, there is a critical gap in aligning these local resources with broader developmental objectives, potentially leading to the underutilization of available assets and missed opportunities for sustainable impact.⚠️ Join us at the 𝗞𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗴𝗮 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹 on 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝘁𝗵 from 𝟴 𝗔𝗠 𝘁𝗼 𝟰 𝗣𝗠 as we delve into these issues and more in partnership with the Kenya Community Development Foundation and the Kenya Philanthropy Forum (KPF). Local resource mobilization is essential for the region's aspiration toward economic autonomy, deeply rooted in understanding the systemic shifts required for revolutionary community development. This model's urgency stems from a critical analysis of global financial dependencies that render the region susceptible to external economic shocks and policy changes. Transitioning towards indigenous resource pools is a strategic move to shield the region's development agenda from such volatilities, ensuring a self-sustained and resilient growth trajectory. In light of these considerations, we, in partnership with the East Africa Philanthropy Network-EAPN and the Kenya Community Development Foundation invite to the "𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆" forum planned to take place at the 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 & 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁 , 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗶, on the 𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. This forum aims to engage stakeholders in deepening their understanding and enhancing their practices around sustainable local resource development. Through collaborative discussions, expert-led panels, and strategy sessions, this will empower participants with the tools and insights necessary to tap into local resources effectively. 📣 We’re proud to announce the publication of 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐬, our annual report for 2023. Last year was marked by turmoil and crises. Dorcas responded by building bridges that brought hope and perspective to people and places off the beaten track. Through the power of partnership, we bridged gaps in equality and opportunity so that individuals could connect and participate and their communities flourish. 🤝 Dorcas also served as the bridge between our stakeholders and supporters and those in need. That bridge enabled us to respond immediately when Syria was hit by earthquakes, continue our support in Ukraine, and stand up for those whose needs are less visible, such as farmers in Tanzania and Mozambique. ✅ Furthermore, throughout 2023, we worked hard on the foundations needed to support strong bridges. For example, we were independently verified against the Core Humanitarian Standard for our humanitarian, development and advocacy mandates. Also, we continued key strategic partnerships, expanded our advocacy efforts, and continued activities to engage with our supporters. 🌱 Thanks to these solid foundations, we could support many individuals and communities cross the bridge to a flourishing life. For instance, in Albania and Moldova, community development projects enabled marginalised individuals to thrive, and in Lebanon, our projects improved the protection and resilience of displaced persons and their host communities. We restored water supplies and improved hygiene for communities in Iraq, and in South Sudan, we built dykes to protect land and people. 👉 Now we invite you to cross the bridge and experience the impact we achieved in 2023. Ahead of the upcoming conference on April 25, which aims to unite diverse lived experience groups, charities, and stakeholders, our Head of Refugee Involvement, Yusuf Ciftci, reflects on the vital need for effective collaboration and leadership within the refugee voluntary sector. He emphasises the significance of integrating lived experiences to forge a more inclusive and impactful future. He writes, "Collaboration is just one word, but it stands as one of the most crucial tools in achieving success and creating more equitable pathways for leadership based on lived experience in the refugee and migrant sector."
