NMITE's thoughts: International Women in Engineering Day! Diverse teams provide enhanced engineering by being more critical and creative. The lived experiences of different groups of people provides a greater chance that a variety of perspectives are taken into account in design and manufacture, producing products and processes that meet the needs of a wider range of people. However, having a diverse engineering team is not enough if the culture around that team is not also enhanced by inclusive behaviours that help people to feel a sense of belonging. Some of the data on the risks of not achieving this is stark, including this piece from IMechE indicating that within a few years of graduating, half of women with an engineering degree will have left the profession (IMechE, 2017). We celebrate International Women in Engineering Day 2024, organised by Women's Engineering Society on June 23. As a business, we strive to increase diversity and encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering, making this an important day. This year’s theme focused on the best, brightest, and bravest women in engineering, who have ‘Enhanced by engineering’ people’s everyday lives and are helping to build a brighter future. We asked some of our female engineers from across EMEIA what ‘Enhanced by Engineering’ means to them. Thandiwe Nyawose, Graduate R&D Engineer, South Africa:   “To me, ‘Enhanced by engineering’ highlights the significant impact and transformative power the engineering sector has all around the world for the improvement of people's livelihoods.”   Aarti Patil, Specification Writer, India:     “Ultimately, ‘Enhanced by engineering’ is about making a difference. It's about knowing that the work I do helps provide better specification and service that improve people's lives. It’s a reminder that engineering is not just a profession but a powerful tool for positive change in the world.”   Carla Afonso, Chief Operations Officer, Portugal:   “In engineering, we are always accumulating knowledge, experience, and solutions to face the challenges that arise at every moment, and this is what, being ‘Enhanced by engineering’ means to me.”     Engineering has always been a male-dominated sector, but we are proud and encouraged to welcome more women into the industry. As a female engineer, I am proud to stand alongside so many talented and dedicated women who have chosen to pursue this challenging and rewarding field. The theme for this year, "Enhanced by Engineering," perfectly encapsulates how women have continuously enriched and advanced the engineering profession. Despite facing numerous challenges, including stereotypes and biases that suggest women are not good enough for engineering, we have persisted and thrived. Women in engineering have had to overcome significant hurdles. The male-dominated environment often questions our abilities, creating barriers that require immense resilience and determination to overcome. However, these struggles have only strengthened our resolve and highlighted our capabilities. Through hard work and perseverance, women engineers have achieved remarkable accomplishments. We have contributed to groundbreaking projects, driven innovation, and provided unique perspectives that have led to better, more inclusive engineering solutions. Our successes are not just individual victories but milestones that pave the way for future generations of women in engineering. Looking ahead, our dreams and aspirations remain as ambitious as ever. We aim to continue breaking barriers, inspiring young girls to pursue careers in STEM, and fostering an environment where gender does not dictate one's potential or opportunities. We envision a future where diversity and inclusion are the norms in engineering, enhancing the profession and benefiting society as a whole. Today, let's celebrate the extraordinary women engineers who are shaping the world, and let's commit to supporting and empowering each other as we continue our journey in this dynamic field. Happy International Women in Engineering Day! I’m reminded of why I chose to venture into the exciting world of engineering. The engineering industry is responsible for all the technologies that we use daily. Engineers develop technical solutions to world challenges, improving the lives of people all over the world. As exciting as this might be, the engineering industry still has a shortage of the people who make up more than half of the world’s population. Having more women in engineering will bring diversity and inclusion in the industry so that the technical innovation developed cater for both males and females. Their skills and knowledge is essential in developing technical solutions to challenges in the world. Hence, why the need for more women in engineering. Today I celebrate all the women engineers that are breaking gender stereotypes, using their engineering skills to build a better world. Women who refuse to be limited by social norms but believing in themselves. The trailblazers, the intelligent and powerful women who also serve as role models to future female engineers. May this day be a celebration that engineering is not a gender industry but anyone including women can thrive in the exciting world of engineering. #INWED2024: Celebrating the Remarkable Women Engineers Enhancing Our Future Beyond the better-known stories of pioneering women engineers like NASA’s Katherine Johnson, as portrayed in "Hidden Figures", countless others have, and continue to, break barriers with their brilliance. Their perseverance, dedication and technical talents drive advancements that shape our world today. This year’s theme for International Women in Engineering Day (June 23), "Enhanced by Engineering," perfectly captures their impact. At RME, we are incredibly grateful for the contributions of our women engineers. From crafting innovative mechanical solutions to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of electrical systems, their expertise is woven into the fabric of the RME Mill Relining System. But their impact goes beyond the making of the machines themselves. Our women Applications Engineers are also problem-solvers, uncovering ways to improve safety and production efficiency for Customers. Their work has a ripple effect, facilitating the production of essential metals like copper and gold that are crucial for enabling the transition to net zero. We like to tell this important story because the wider workforce statistics remain challenging. In Australia, for example, Engineers Australia (EA) states that only 13% of qualified engineers are female, with an even smaller portion actively working in the field. In their 2022 study, the main reason cited by women who did not pursue engineering was a lack of familiarity and awareness of what engineering involves. We know we have a responsibility to change this narrative. That's why, for #INWED24, in addition to paying tribute to RME’s women engineers, we're also grateful for the opportunity to support student associations like the UniSQ Toowoomba Engineering Club and their efforts to inspire the next generation of engineers. Celebrating Women in Engineering: Breaking Barriers and Achieving Equity June 23 marks International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in engineering. Organizations like the Society of Women Engineers and Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide are leading the charge in promoting gender equity and encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering. Despite significant progress, women still face numerous challenges in engineering. In the UK, women make up only 16.5% of professional engineers, with even lower percentages in fields like mechanical engineering and computer science. Report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics further breaks down the numbers. It reveals in greater detail how women are underrepresented comprising: 8.5% of mechanical engineers 17.4% of aerospace engineers 27.9% of chemical engineers 17.1% of civil engineers 15.7% of computer hardware engineers 8.1% of electrical and electronics engineers 25% of industrial engineers, including health and safety 14.9% of all other engineers Moreover, the average income of female engineers are 3.5% more than male engineers and average age of female engineers if about 37 while that for male engineers is 42, at the same more number of female engineers occupying higher hierarchical work positions than male engineers. Women in engineering have made notable patent contributions, such as India's first-ever all-women crew flying a long-haul flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru in 2019. This achievement highlights the capabilities of women in engineering and underscores the importance of promoting equal opportunities and challenging gender stereotypes. As we celebrate INWED, it is crucial to recognize the ongoing efforts of organizations like SWE and WIDS in fostering a more inclusive and diverse engineering community. By supporting women in engineering and providing them with the necessary resources, we can create a more equitable and innovative industry that benefits everyone. International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) provides a clear call to women to shape the world. Taking place annually on June 23, INWED is an international awareness campaign celebrating the work and achievements of women engineers. The day provides an important opportunity to raise the profile of women engineers and highlight the amazing career opportunities available. Engineering shapes the world and helps make our planet a better, safer, more innovative and exciting place to be. Encouraging girls into engineering careers: INWED focuses attention on the many opportunities for women in engineering, at a time when it has never been more important to address the engineering skills shortage. It is critical to encourage girls to consider engineering careers and to help fill the substantial future job opportunities predicted for the engineering sector. A global celebration of women engineers: Launched initially in the UK by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) as a national initiative, INWED has grown year by year, and has since achieved a global reach and UNESCO patronage. The idea behind the day is to encourage all groups - governmental, educational, corporate, individuals and further organizations - to organize events to support the day and link them together for maximum impact. Every year, hundreds of INWED activities span countries around the world like the USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Sierra Leone, Hong Kong, Canada, Rwanda, Panama and many more. With the help and guidance from INWED resources, events and activities are organized across communities, united by the aim of raising the profile of engineering as an exciting career choice for women and girls. Supporting women to achieve potential: INWED is delivered by Women’s Engineering Society - a membership organization that ensures equality for women in this non-traditional sector. 🎉 Happy International Women in Engineering Day! #INWED24 🎉 INWED aims to encourage more girls and women to pursue careers in engineering. The day highlights the contributions of women to the engineering field and promotes gender diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Today, we chose to highlight the contributions of one our valued engineers – Rebecca Ho. 📖 Rebecca’s story:  Currently I am a process engineer at Oort Energy and it’s been almost 2 years since I started. I grew fond of STEM and out of curiosity was fascinated about the idea of applying engineering knowledge and phenomena to the real world. I enjoy that as an engineer you get to work with diverse minds to innovate and develop solutions to problems. 👷♀️ What drew you to engineering: I like the problem solving aspect to it. I have learnt that engineering can be creative as there can be so many ways of creating solutions to problems. Within my role I want to contribute to the business and the wider global aim of achieving net zero, saving the world! 👩🏫 Advice for future engineers: Ladies, if you have the passion and curiosity for engineering go for it. Put yourself out there as there are so many opportunities to network, gain experience and improve your skill set. Ask many questions!
