I frequently write about the critical need for increased investment in primary care, which will help us build our primary care workforce and recruit the best and brightest in medicine to choose primary care specialties. Building a robust primary care workforce requires us to think comprehensively about the issues that have led us to where we are today - loss of autonomy, insufficient investment/payment, administrative burden, and a lack of focus on the value of comprehensive primary care. Another issues that needs greater attention is the role of medical schools in creating a pro primary care culture. This morning, I came across an op-ed written by a fourth-year family medicine student that reminded me of just how bright the future of family medicine is. Medical student Danielle Gabuzda wrote eloquently about the need to address medical school cultures, to bolster primary care experience in medical schools, and to invest in primary care. These are big challenges. Thankfully, there are people like the future Dr. Gabuzda entering primary care who are committed to identifying and addressing shortcomings so that we can make primary care for all a reality.

The Quillen College of Medicine ranked inside the top five of this year’s U.S. News and World Report rankings of medical schools with the most graduates practicing in health professional shortage areas, and continues to move up among the nation’s top medical schools for primary care and research. The College of Medicine ranked fifth in “Medical Schools with the Most Graduates Practicing in Health Professional Shortage Areas” and top 50 in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of medical schools with the most graduates practicing in primary care. #BucsGoBeyond #BestMedicalSchools

Test grades and effort are important for medical students, but they also need to be ready to practice the basics of clinical medicine as they transition to residency. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, there are projections of a physician shortage of 86,000 by 2036 (https://lnkd.in/edb6K-sR) (!). Really appreciate this perspective. Medical schools have massive opportunity to evolve their curricula and prep. Those schools that also share in governing large post-graduate medical education environments can make this continuous, iterative, and stepwise which may yield the smoothest transition into next-generation practice and some restoration of joy, 21st century practice competence combined with exceptional clinical knowledge, and an understanding of how to contribute to further to general healthcare environment. #medicalschool #medicaleducation #medicalpractice #healthcare #healthcaresystem

As an undergraduate student seeking to build a future career in the health field, this article discusses the juxtaposition between the difficulty of being accepted to medical school in spite of a national doctor storage. The following article running in U.S. News & World Report, features our own Alvin Bisarya, MD talking about important steps pre-med students should take on the path to becoming a doctor. He says extracurriculars should help pre-meds find their “why” for medical school – what drives their passion for medicine. That's something admissions officers look at closely.
