In 1978, at the age of 34, Michael George was flying a small airplane from Seattle, WA to Anchorage, AK when his avionic system lost function, forcing him to make an emergency landing on a deserted island. Michael remained under a tree for 10 days with little hope for rescue—until a fishing boat unexpectedly docked near him, saving his life. As a result of the weather conditions he endured, Michael suffered from severe frostbite on his feet, which led to bilateral amputations at the ankle. In the decades since his ordeal, Michael, now 80, has never let his challenges stop him from pursuing his dreams. For 56 years, he thrived as a home developer until his recent retirement, and to this day, he remains remarkably active—cycling, engaging in strength training, and collaborating closely with his prosthetist Matt Uellendahl at the #HangerClinic in Phoenix, AZ (pictured here with Michael and wife Cheryl) to meet all his goals. I walked maybe three miles through central Austin this morning and saw perhaps 5 pedestrians? I saw hundreds, maybe thousands of cars. This is fundamentally alienating. Car world is a world without dogs, children, elderly people, people with physical and intellectual disabilities. It is a world where women don't feel safe going on walks. It is a world where almost noone feels safe riding bicycles. It is a lonely, dangerous place. Cars have killed four million Americans, and they will continue to kill and maim more innocent people every day. And for what? You get to live in 1500 SQFT instead of 750? AT WHAT COST? All social connection? Any modicum of community? The ability to simply leave the house without a tank? The ability to let your kids play outside? The ability to let your kids run errands? The ability to leave the dog in the yard? The ability to walk to the store, the deli? The ability to have a few beers and wander home? It's 2024. Not a single person needs an internal combustion engine to get to the store. It might have been profitable for a little while to completely destroy the earth to sell a few F-150's, but it won't be profitable for long.
