Rye Whiskey : Top Dollar for a Top Tipple? 🥃 While bourbon has long reigned supreme in the United States, rye whisky's distinct spicy and robust flavor profile has captured the hearts and palates of whiskey enthusiasts across the United States. Leading the charge are states like New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, where rye whisky has deep historical roots and a devoted following. Several factors have contributed to rye whisky's meteoric rise in popularity. The craft distilling movement has played a pivotal role, with numerous small-batch distilleries experimenting with unique rye mash bills and aging techniques. Additionally, the growing appreciation for complex and flavorful spirits among discerning drinkers has fueled the demand for rye whisky's bold character. As the craze for rye whisky intensifies, prices have soared, with some rare and limited-edition bottles fetching exorbitant sums on the secondary market. Iconic brands like Rittenhouse Rye, Bulleit Rye, and Willett Family Estate have become household names among whiskey aficionados, while newer labels like WhistlePig and Sagamore Spirit have quickly garnered acclaim. In the picture, The EH Taylor 'Bottled in Bond', is also a good example of what fine rye whiskey could look like and already retails for ~ $250 ! Bartenders and mixologists have embraced rye whisky's versatility, incorporating it into classic cocktails like the Manhattan and Sazerac, as well as crafting innovative concoctions that showcase its distinctive flavor profile. From rye-based Old Fashioneds to daring new libations, the resurgence of rye whisky has ushered in a golden age of creativity and experimentation in the world of mixology. As the demand for rye whisky continues to soar, one thing is certain: this once-overlooked spirit has firmly established itself as a must-have for whiskey enthusiasts and cocktail connoisseurs alike, cementing its place as a true American original. Looking to try a new rum? Check out recommendations from Tony Sachs in Robb Report. One of his picks, includes #DonQRum made at Destileria Serralles,Inc. Don Q is produced at Destileria Serralles in Puerto Rico, which has been making rum since 1865—it’s the oldest distillery on the island and is still family-owned. Puerto Rican rum is quite light in general, and in this case, that’s where the cask finish is extra beneficial. Aged for five to eight years in ex-bourbon barrels, it’s then matured another three years in ex-European tawny port casks (the brand isn’t specified). Bottled at 40 percent ABV, the port finish gives the rum a more substantial mouthfeel and a nice burst of flavor. Many Port cask-matured spirits can taste overly sweet and jammy, but the fruity notes here are dry and elegant. The finishing was done judiciously in this case, resulting in a beautifully balanced rum that works as a sipper or in cocktails—give it a go in a rum Old Fashioned or perhaps a Corn N’ Oil. Interesting info from M. Shanken Communications about Mezcal. Hit a speed bump but still continues to grow. I think its a great category to be in and its not too late to get started. Consumers need to be educated and we need LIQUOR TO LIPS. Love that saying. If you want to get your own brand or pick up an existing one let Beverage Solutions || Big Dog New York LLC know. We can do both. "While still a fraction of the size of Tequila, the dominant agave spirit, mezcal is benefiting from an influx of new brands and extensions, catering to both category aficionados and first time drinkers. For 2023, Impact Databank estimates that mezcal exports to the U.S. were at 803,000 cases, a dip from 2022, when the category nearly cracked 900,000 cases. Still, consumer interest has continued to grow, especially as larger on-premise players consistently feature the category on cocktail menus. “Mezcal continues to be a very attractive category, and the short-term slowdown is driven by the overall headwinds of the spirits industry,” Mauricio Vergara, Bacardi's president and COO for d’Ussé Cognac, Patrón Tequila, and Ilegal mezcal tells SND. “Mezcal is extremely well-positioned to capture trade and consumer interest and continue its growth trajectory as the spirits industry normalizes. Even within the short-term slowdown in the category, Ilegal continues to outperform.” https://lnkd.in/eWdZah9A

Best for Cocktails: Patrón El Cielo Looking for the best tequila for your cocktails? Look no further than Patrón El Cielo. Made for mixing, this blanco is the first to be distilled four times, bringing out more of the agave's sweetness and releasing notes of fresh cucumber and celery. Contrary to misconceptions, the additional distillation stage does not dilute the flavor. Elevate your cocktails like Ranch Water or Martini with the distinct flavor of Patrón El Cielo. https://lnkd.in/e-WC8hMv

Agave spirits, led by Tequila, are surging in popularity, with Tequila recently overtaking American whiskey in the US market. Despite Tequila's dominance, Mezcal is also gaining attention, particularly in the US and Mexico. Handcrafted mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico, is considering expansion into retail and grocery channels, reflecting the overall growth trajectory of the agave spirits category 🌱. Forecasts suggest continued growth in both volume and value for the combined Tequila and mezcal category, underlining the industry's upward trend 📈.#AgaveSpirits #Tequila #Mezcal #IndustryTrends https://lnkd.in/gG6KQAPs

The changing perception of tequila across the globe has helped the spirit scale new heights, with it now occupying the number two spot in the US after vodka. Sales are also booming in UK cocktail bars. But how can the agave-based nectar take off in the off-trade? For The Grocer, I've taken a look at the reasons why - for all the fanfare - tequila-mania is yet to translate to scale in UK grocery, with sales just a fraction of the wider £5bn spirits category. Despite tequila remaining a relatively niche pursuit for UK shoppers, however, the fact the spirit is managing to buck wider declines to record value and volume growth in a challenging alcohol market suggests there are reasons to be cheerful. In the words of Deano Moncrieffe: “It’s snowballing, and it’s not going to slow down. It’s just going to get bigger and bigger.” With thanks to Deano, Tom Bishop, John Vine, Andrew Eagle, 🍸 Rob Wallis, Anthony Gladman and others for their time and insight!
