🌍 When I read the below Project Syndicate article, it reminded me of an Ethiopian proverb that roughly translates to English as "Killing two birds with one stone." This proverb isn't about harming birds but rather about achieving two objectives simultaneously. In a similar vein, the article argues how incorporating renewable energy into agriculture can help address two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): zero hunger (#SDG2) and universal energy access (#SDG7). It is particularly crucial now to integrate renewable energy technologies into our food system, as the world must support its ever-growing population while also meeting its net-zero goals. The current fossil fuel-powered food system is neither sustainable, resilient, nor equitable. Therefore, we require a paradigm shift in our agri-food system that could democratize access to yield-enhancing technologies, improve production sustainably, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is where solutions such as solar-powered irrigation and cold storage can play a role in transforming our agri-food system.
