International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)'s REmap team successfully hosted a two-day workshop on 16 and 17 October, presenting preliminary findings from the ongoing Regional Energy Transition Outlook (RETO) for the European Union to EU Member State representatives. The EU RETO examines #decarbonization pathways for achieving the EU's energy and #climate objectives, in alignment with current European regulatory frameworks. During the workshop, the team presented comprehensive analysis covering the transformation of key end-use sectors - transport, industry, and buildings- as well as the power sector's essential role in the #energy supply landscape. This integrated approach provides valuable insights into how the #EU can effectively navigate its #energytransition while meeting its climate objectives.

New data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that the annual energy intensity improvement rate must increase from 2% in 2022 to 4% by 2030 to meet the #UAEConsensus energy goals. This will require faster progress in efficiency measures and electrification across multiple sectors, including transport, building and industry. In 2023, 84% of investments in #renewableenergy capacity went to China, the European Union and the United States. Brazil and India accounted for just over 6%. At the same time, emerging and developing economies, in particular, continue to face financing gaps that undermine access to capital-intensive #energytransition technologies. Renewable power investments in Africa declined by 47% between 2022 and 2023. Sub-Saharan Africa received 40 times less than the world average per capita transition-related investment, according to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)'s latest tracking report. Reducing this gap involves securing financing at better terms by mitigating country risks and increasing the availability of concessional finance, mostly from multilateral and bilateral development funds and financing institutions and philanthropies. International collaboration will be crucial to better channel funds to achieve climate, development and industrialisation goals for a more equitable world. I'm leaving Nairobi inspired. Thanks to the leadership of APRA countries, the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) has moved from a concept just over a year ago to concluding its 1st Investment Forum, bringing global exposure to a robust project pipeline from across the continent. Looking forward to the next milestone at COP29 Azerbaijan.

Global investments in renewable energy capacity reached a record of USD 570 billion in 2023. 📈 New International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report underscores that current investment levels fall short and must reach USD 1.5 trillion annually from 2024-2030 to meet #3xRenewables under the #UAEConsensus set at #COP28. International collaboration will be crucial to better channel funds to achieve climate, development and industrialisation goals for a more equitable world. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3BBV7su
