Melinda Gate's new philanthropic focus and how she is deploying $1billion dollars of capital confirms over and over again how little we still invest in women and most importantly girls., so much so that the world needs someone at the level of Melinda Gates, to use incredible wealth, to help the world shift for good. Talk about #impact, to use extensive #wealth with #intentionality, to align one's personal #values with how we use #currency, #capital, #money. To surround yourself with people, organizations and advisors that live and breathe their values too. Melinda is not alone in this task, many other people are working really hard to change how the world views the economic power that women already have, and how everyone at every level benefits when we invest in women and girls, and when women are present. Yesterday was very exciting day for the Women in the Digital Economy Fund (WiDEF). At the WiDEF launch at #CSW68 there was a packed room and great discussion and the first call for applications was announced. Thanks to those who joined the event and discussion! This follows our announcement last week of our WiDEF Advisory Council members. I am very excited to be working with this amazing group of individuals who bring such rich and diverse experience and expertise. They are Osama Manzar, Shikoh Gitau and Dr Karen S. (who were able to join in person at the launch yesterday and shared great insights), Helani Galpaya, Aamir Ibrahim, Neema Iyer, Dorothy Okello, Araba Sey and Camilo Téllez. On #iwd2024 we shared our updated GSMA - Mobile for Development #ConnectedWomen numbers of the gender gap in mobile internet in low-and-middle income countries. Our data highlights that this gender gap is both stubborn and substantial. Women are 15% less likely than men to use mobile internet in LMICs - increasing to 32% in Sub-Saharan Africa and 31% in South Asia. But together we can make a difference and accelerate digital inclusion for women. The first call for applications aims to scale proven solutions that have demonstrated they: 1️⃣ Drive digital inclusion for women, e.g. through access to smartphones and the internet 2️⃣ Significantly close the gender digital divide in their context 3️⃣ Are economically sustainable and scalable 🌍 Eligible geographies are countries where USAID operates; at least 50% of award funding will support entities in SS Africa. "The initiative, named “Women Are Limitless: Accelerating Inclusive Growth and Impact,” aims to put in place over $1 billion in investment capital, with $300 million raised through philanthropy, $300 million secured in the form of debt capital, and the remainder will be generated internally from interest income and reinvested into the program and communities. The World Economic Forum estimates it will take 134 years to close the gender gap. 🤢 ... i.e. my daughters will not experience global parity in their lifetime. Haunted by this reality, I actively seek to support advocates of change and businesses empowering future generations of women. Last week, I invested in in Female Invest, a company closing the financial gender gap and improving female financial literacy. This company is already a big deal, and I'm not the only one who thinks so... ...because in just 4 minutes, they secured £906,283 from 1,827 community investors.
