🔍 Your question answered: How occupational health can help onboarding processes? With recent discussions on LinkedIn highlighting the importance of recruitment and onboarding processes done right, it’s a good time to discuss how occupational health plays a pivotal role. A New Starter Assessment is conducted by an occupational health clinician after an employment offer has been made to evaluate any medical conditions that might impact the new hire's ability to perform their role safely and effectively. It's also essential to identify if the job itself could negatively affect the employee's health and determine if any adjustments are needed to comply with legal obligations. The assessment itself will vary depending upon the job role. For example, for a sedentary desk-based job it can be a simple process that involves the completion of a questionnaire and, if required, a telephone assessment. For job roles that may include physical activity and safety-critical tasks, a questionnaire is used, and if required this is followed up with a telephone or face-to-face consultation. Can assessments be done at the recruitment stage? Under the Equality Act 2010, employers must not inquire about the health of job applicants before making a job offer, except in specific circumstances. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) emphasises the importance of managing health and safety risks in the workplace. New Starter Assessments are a key component of this, helping to identify potential risks and implement appropriate measures to protect employees. We can help you navigate the complexities of New Starter Assessments to safeguard your workforce and your business. Feel free to reach out for more information or to schedule a consultation! #Leadership #HumanResources #EmployeeWellbeing #DEI

The importance of OHSA in the workplace The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) is important to the workplace because it safeguards the welfare of those in employment. Occupational Health and Safety legislation was established to protect both employees and employers. It is part of the legislation under the basic guides of regulation. The Department of Labour takes the well-being of employees very seriously, as should employers. The OHSA Assessment The Occupational Health and Safety Assessment is enforced by closely monitoring workplace conditions to identify and eliminate hazards. This includes everything from chemical and ergonomical risks to physical and psycho-social risks. The level of risk associated with a profession or industry is taken into consideration when the assessment is undertaken. Construction workers are more at risk to suffer a serious fall than someone working at a desk (though not impossible). What is a safety representative? A safety representative is responsible for enforcing the laws set by the OHSA and completing regular Occupational Health and Safety Assessments. The safety representative is responsible for: • identifying hazardous conditions and informing employees thereof • providing extensive training so that duties are performed safely • providing protective clothing and ensuring that it is worn • preventing employees who do not adhere to safety regulations or who have not received proper training from using potentially hazardous equipment • checking the functionality of equipment and ensuring that such equipment is maintained regularly • providing visible and clear warning signs for hazardous equipment and machinery • ensuring that the operators of dangerous machinery are in control and enforcing the same safety rules among other employees • providing and clearly marking escape routes • training workers on the proper emergency procedures • preserving evidence at the scene of an injury to prevent disturbance or removal thereof. All hazardous material, equipment and machinery must be assessed so that those working with them are protected. Where, for instance, someone loses their hearing as a result of prolonged exposure to machinery and had not been provided with protection for their ears, a safety representative would have seen this potential danger and ensured that staff were provided with the correct safety equipment. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a major area of concern within every workplace in Canada, and it features many rules and regulations administered by provincial governments. Yet, relatively few people have much training in workplace OHS. Without proper oversight, policies, and program implementation—and regular review—in OHS, employees can be injured and or killed at the workplace, with employers and management held liable. The Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety will give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to be competent in creating and overseeing a safe workplace that is steeped and knowledgeable in the rules, regulations and legislation regarding OHS on Prince Edward Island. Within the certificate program, topics like legislation, responsibilities, and due diligence will be discussed, as well as creating a realistic, relevant but thorough program for OHS within the workplace, how to properly implement and revise that OHS program, as well as how to properly handle OHS incidents when they take place. At the end of the certificate program, participants will know and be confident in their organization’s responsibilities for OHS, be able to ensure those responsibilities are met and safety within the workplace is always at the forefront, and how to handle any issues involving OHS that may occur https://lnkd.in/dmS6fci3

Qualities and attributes of an occupational health and safety personnel Occupational health and safety personnel play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of workers in a variety of industries. These professionals are responsible for identifying and mitigating risks, promoting safe practices, and ensuring compliance with regulations to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. One of the most important qualities of an occupational health and safety personnel is attention to detail. They must be able to identify potential hazards in the workplace and assess the risks associated with them. This requires a keen eye for noticing even the smallest of details that could lead to accidents or injuries. Another crucial attribute of a successful occupational health and safety personnel is communication skills. They must be able to effectively communicate with employees, management, and other stakeholders to ensure that everyone is aware of and follows safety protocols. This includes conducting training sessions, creating safety manuals, and providing feedback on safety performance. Problem-solving skills are also essential for occupational health and safety personnel. They must be able to quickly and effectively address any safety issues that arise in the workplace. This could involve investigating accidents, analyzing data, and developing solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future. Furthermore, a strong understanding of occupational health and safety regulations is necessary for personnel in this field. They must stay up-to-date on the latest laws and regulations to ensure that their workplace remains compliant and that employees are protected from harm. Empathy is another important quality for occupational health and safety personnel. They must be able to understand the concerns and needs of employees, and be able to work with them to create a safe and healthy work environment. This involves listening to their concerns, providing support, and advocating for their well-being. In general, occupational health and safety personnel require a combination of technical expertise, communication proficiency, problem-solving skills, regulatory understanding, and empathy to perform their duties effectively. By embodying these qualities and attributes, they can help create a safer and healthier work environment for all employees. #HSE #Safety #practitioner #identifyingandmitigatingrisks #promotingsafepractices #communication #problemsolvingskills #regulatory
