A moment of reflection, One of the most frustrating parts of working within the automotive industry is that in general people don’t realise how skilled the men and women who work in Aftersales are. They deserve every penny they earn, it has always been a very technical job as cars have become increasingly more complex, but now we are on a completely new level of complexity, and even though we explain in detail what we have to do to repair the vehicle we still find ourselves justifying the invoice value. Our teams have to regularly complete extensive training courses to ensure that our collective knowledge is capable of carrying out the required repairs, and business owners have to invest in equipment that costs thousands of pounds. So the next time you hear, “My mate down the pub can do that!” or you find yourself standing in your local garage when they are trying to piece together the chain of events that has caused the issue with the car, bear in mind one thing. If we don’t make a profit, we will no longer be here to support you when things go wrong. The invoice value reflects the costs of training, equipment, knowledge, people and customer service; not just the time it took to fix it. Weekend musings, today's subject... Tyres!! More specifically tyres and MOT test time, we've had a load of tests done in the last two months, the results when dropped off for prep at the relevant dealers a phonecall stating we need an obscene amount of tyres and this is my favourite line "Cut to Cords" it's funny they weren't 6 weeks ago when in for PMI. So my most recent example, a rigid of ours was dropped off yesterday and sure enough the call came that every single tyre needed replaced😧 The technician had made that call, replaced not attention, £2k, not my money don't give a Sh@@ attitude, anyway the outcome this morning, two replaced and the rest filled, a now common practice. Also when we spoke to said dealer it's down to the Tyre fitters discretion 😱 So, in the last 2 or 3 years what has changed? why are the dealers all shouting for new tyres at the drop of a hat, and why only at test time are the tyres an issue, if the truck was stopped at a roadside inspection there was no way it would have been flagged with tyre issues. Tyre manufacturers all give it the big one that they last this amount of time and they will return this amount of kilometres etc etc, the reality is if you're lucky you'll get 12 months as when it's test time people are scrapping them as they're "Cut to Cords" So other operators, what do you do, what do you think? Dealers, why are you condemning tyres that have in reality not been on 10 minutes, and more than happy to hear from the authorities that be on why were now scrapping rubber on the tiniest thing, we spent over £6k alone last month on new tyres, and yet if it had been PMI time all those tyres would still be on the road today. Are we all that afraid of a test failure now, and as it's not their money a shout for new tyres is now just par for the course, now let's play nice. and have some constructive responses people. 🚛🚛 🤑 💰

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has truck tire pressure guidelines all motor carriers must follow, outlined in Section 393.75 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Here’s what you need to know: 🔎 Key Guidelines: ➡ Minimum tire tread depth for trailers is 2/32 of an inch along the major grooves. ➡ Steer tire regulations require 4/32 of an inch tread depth on front tires for better traction on wet or slippery roads. ➡ Recapped or regrooved tires are not allowed on the front wheels of buses. ➡ No specific DOT tire pressure regulation exists, but tires must be properly inflated based on manufacturer guidelines and load weight. 🔥 Watch out for heat! Heat can create a false boost in tire pressure, leading to underinflation and potential blowouts on the road. Using a high-quality tire gauge with a dual head is key for weekly tire pressure checks, ensuring they’re within the manufacturer's suggested range. 🛠️ Tire Safety Tips: ➡ Inspect your tires often for damage, poor tread depth, or foreign objects. ➡ Maintain proper inflation pressure with a tire gauge – thumping tires won’t cut it! ➡ Avoid underinflation to prevent structural damage inside the tire. ➡ Use only approved rims to avoid tire explosions. "MARK UP" - This one blows my mind. Why Insurance Companies believe "there is not a justifiable cost behind a sublet service." It is not huge percentage of the repair cost, but at my faciliy it is literally a 3-4 person job to facilitate the paperwork behind all the sublet work that is done. This should be paid. But, there is always an struggle. "Mark Up Some insurance adjusters automatically pay a markup on sublet repairs, towing, recalibrations, or other services, and some won’t. But, of course, you should receive some compensation for arranging the service, ensuring the work is done properly, and fronting repair costs for third-party payers/insurance companies. After all, these activities consume billable hours for your employees! However, billing a percentage markup doesn’t always make sense from the insurance company's perspective. If calibration for a new vehicle costs thousands of dollars, you shouldn’t necessarily get a 25% markup for arranging this costly calibration. A good strategy is to try for a flat 25% markup since some insurance companies may adhere to the basic formula. But, in most cases, you should be ready to negotiate labor hours for arranging these services at body rates while considering that it may take two people to deliver a vehicle if one person needs to drive the other back."
