Bloomberg's recent analysis highlights Africa's ascendancy in the green-energy chronicles, underscored by China's intensifying hunt for #lithium. From almost a non-existent share in 2020, now Africa is expected to contribute up to 11% to the global lithium supply. Its ambitious development plans, fueled by strategic partnerships, should help generate tax revenue and benefits for its local communities as its market share keeps expanding. Aligned with this trend, we had pre-empted the broader recognition that Africa has the potential to host world-class hard rock Li resources and we have been developing a solid exploration strategy and a JV partnership with one of the world's largest lithium producers to create a collection of top-tier lithium projects in Africa's most promising locations. U.S. GOVERNMENT'S DFC TO INVEST $50 MILLION IN SOUTH AFRICA RARE EARTHS MINE ⛏ The #UnitedStates government, through the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation ("DFC"), is backing a #SouthAfrican #rareearth mine (TechMet Ltd) with a $50 million #investment. #Phalaborwa is the #mine and is poised to become the world's largest low-cost producer of rare earth oxides. The mine's advantage is that it has readily accessible above-ground phosphogypsum piles. The deposits contain rich concentrations of minerals essential for building electric vehicles, wind turbines, and other clean energy technologies including: ✔ #neodymium, ✔ #praseodymium, ✔ #dysprosium, and ✔ #terbium. While not directly connected to the #LobitoCorridor, the Phalaborwa project and the Lobito Corridor represent different pieces of a larger U.S. strategic puzzle in #Africa, aiming at resource security, economic development, and fostering stronger partnerships on the continent. Local value addition is a must. The railway line should not be a resource looting mechanism. Real investment should not simply focus on building transportation infrastructure to take out the raw minerals from Africa. It should equally focus on building local industries for mineral value addition. Otherwise, it is just same old father exploitation in the house.

Unfortunately, this program is currently not accepting applications due to the high demand and will re-open at a future date despite having $80 million dollars allocated over 5 years during the 2022 budget. The overwhelming response is indicative of a couple things: 1) First Nations desire to be equity partners in major resource development in their territory, 2) The lack of capacity of First Nation communities to effectively be involved within the economic framework, 3) How unprepared the government is in effectively running its own programs developed to help our communities. I tried to reach out to the department email provided on their website to inquire as to when they plan to reopen the program but no response as of yet. Hopefully the program opens again soon so we can have more of our communities be meaningful partners with corporate Canada in resource development projects. #indigenbiz #indigenous #business #funding #government #partnerships

A closer look: The Lobito Corridor🚂 The Wall Street Journal explores the railway megaproject and examines the high-stakes battle between the U.S. and China for economic influence in Africa and securing vital mineral supply chains. While the commitment to invest is extremely positive for the region, all three participating countries, namely the Angola, DRC and Zambia, have made several statements to the effect of not simply wanting to ship the extracted materials out, but to add value along the EV supply chain. To ensure that the region benefits as planned by the Lobito Corridor, it will be up to governments and regional stakeholders to ensure fairness and balance in agreements with international governments and corporations. #angola #drc #zambia #lobitocorridor
