The USGBC California Green Building Corps (GBC) represents a structured internship initiative that offers participants a valuable chance to gain practical experience, forge connections, and actively contribute to green building projects. The objective is to enhance the overall well-being, affordability, and sustainability of California for all its residents. Participants in this program extend their support to various projects, including the USGBC California Annual Environmental Justice Project, Green Schools microgrant initiatives, the California Native Plant Landscape Curriculum, as well as other chapter programs and member groups. Additionally, green building projects are identified from within architecture, engineering, and construction firms, sustainability consultancies, public agencies, and community partners. The goal is for these projects to yield public or community benefits, enabling those seeking opportunities to acquire hands-on experience, foster connections, and strengthen their positioning for future employment. https://lnkd.in/ghNdjxjU

How has the glass industry provided for you? For your family? That is a question I return to often when talking to people about my job. And it’s an important thing to keep in mind when encouraging others to join our industry. It’s not just about the job itself; it’s about the life the job can afford you. For me, the glass industry has allowed me to live in Colorado, where I can raise my family and enjoy the outdoors. For Jacob, a second-year glazier apprentice in the Eastern Washington North Idaho Glaziers Apprenticeship Program, the industry already has afforded him the opportunity to pursue dirt bikes and street bikes. When recruiting young people to the industry, share how your job has improved your quality of life outside of the workplace. For Gen Z, especially, this can be very impactful. It just might be what entices them to become a glazier, an estimator, a salesperson. I always joke that “once you’re in the glass industry, you never leave.” Tell them why… National Glass Association (NGA) CITCWA: Construction Industry Training Council of Washington Modern Glass Company #WorkforceDevelopment #Glass #GlassBeast

Leadership Coaching and Training for Ph.D. Scientists and Engineers | Former Chief Innovation Officer | Author | Speaker
My first internship was when I was sophomore in college. It was at a Texaco natural gas plant in Alabama. When I arrived, I had to stay in the front office with the admins and engineers until the regional safety director from Houston trained me and cleared me to go out into the plant. 🦺The safety director, a gentleman who was exactly what you’d expect from an oil man from Texas (cowboy hat, boots, huge belt buckle, and a mouth full of tobacco) arrived and gave me some reading materials and a presentation. On his way out he said, 🤿“Before I let you back there, I need to know you can put on this SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and walk out here to the rally point”. So he showed me how to put it on. Then I put it on and took it off by myself. 😰(Admittedly, it was hard. I was not prepared to walk around with a 30 lb gas cylinder on my back!) “All righty”, he said. 🏭🏭(Woot, I was excited…I’ll finally get to go where the action is!) “Do that every day for the next two weeks and when I get back I’ll check you and clear you to go back into the plant”. (Every day for 2 weeks!?) 😟😣I don’t know if I said anything, but the look on my face must have betrayed my thoughts. Because he spit his tobacco on the ground, looked at me, and said, 💡“Young lady, if you want to run with the big dogs, you’ve got to pee in the tall grass. I’m not letting you back there until I know you’ll be safe. So what’s it gonna be?”. 💪🏾So I took a deep breath and put the SCBA back on. He seemed satisfied with that so he said “See ya”. 🎉🏭Two weeks later he came back and I was good to go! ➡️25 years later, every time I come up against a challenge that I don’t want to undertake because I think it will be hard or uncomfortable, I remind myself, 🐕🐕“If you want to run with the big dogs, you’ve got to pee in the tall grass”. What is your tall grass today? #innovation #entrepreneurship #engineering #leadership #management #personaldevelopment

Principal Instructor at University of Colorado, Boulder, Founder, Construction-Education, and Principal Training Specialist at Safety Function
Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent." We're asking new interns and engineers to navigate a complex construction environment while also performing important tasks. For the sake of safety, production, quality and all the other critical factors on a project, put yourself in their shoes and take time to train and orient your new folks this summer. If you're looking for time-tested resources, Construction-Education can help.
