In January 2014, what began as an experimental course at the Kelley School of Business has blossomed into something far greater than we ever imagined. The Hoosier Social Impact Fund (HSIF) started as Kelley Leads (BUS-L355), a 1.5 credit hour course co-taught by the incredible Professor Keith G. Dayton and Professor Tim Lemper, in collaboration with the Kelley Institute for Social Impact. Our goal was simple yet profound: to empower sustainable economic development through access to affordable capital and financial education. But this course was never just about textbooks or lectures—it was about making a real, tangible impact. A group of 23 passionate undergraduate students, four dedicated IU graduate students, the two faculty members, and key representatives from the Kelley Institute for Social Impact came together to form what would become a transformative force in the community. This team, born from the classroom, launched HSIF as a formal organization—a lending institution partnered with local banking communities that transcended traditional boundaries, working both locally and internationally to serve businesses with minimal credit. From this humble yet ambitious beginning, the Hoosier Community Network (HCN) was born—a nonprofit umbrella organization that now encompasses numerous student teams, all working tirelessly to make a difference in our community. Today, we are proud to have over 200 members contributing to the betterment of communities. HCN stands as a testament to the power of education, collaboration, and the unwavering belief that we can create positive change. It’s a reminder that when we come together with a shared purpose, we can build something truly extraordinary. This is just a snippet of how HCN was started. We have so much more to share about our journey and the projects we've been involved in. Follow us on our journey to see our organization grow and as we continue to serve more local communities every day. #HoosierCommunityNetwork #HCN #SocialEntrepreneurship #CommunityDevelopment #EducationalImpact #EmpowermentThroughEducation #SocialImpact #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityEmpowerment #NonprofitLeadership #StudentLeadership #BusinessForGood

Pioneer Alumni Ambassador Evan, from Hong Kong, has his own educational non-profit in his home city. When he applied to Pioneer, he chose economics as his first-choice research area so that he could explore materials that could help him make his personal enterprise more effective, and was placed in a concentration focused on digital economics. A transformational experience in the course of his research accomplished more than he dreamed of when he began, changing both his approach to his research paper and his approach to the students his non-profit is designed to help. In the video, Evan describes the insight that was his transformational moment. Evan’s research addressed the relationship between digital resources, socioeconomic status, and children's educational outcomes in Hong Kong. Like most scholars and non-profits, Evan began by exploring the lack of resources for underserved communities. But as he investigated the implications of this lack, he realized that there was another, deeper component to the ability of students in underserved communities to succeed academically. He found that there is a psychological component to the problem that has not been given adequate attention. Youngsters in underserved communities carry a burden of embarrassment, even shame, of coming from communities where so many non-profits are trying to help. This understanding transformed Evan’s own approach to underserved Hong Kong youth through his non-profit, and “we’ve seen successes through that.” In reflecting on his Pioneer experience, Evan summarizes, “this program not only developed my skills as a researcher, but also gave me the opportunity to create meaningful change through research.” Pioneer’s vision is to improve the current academic culture by creating educational experiences that are inspiring and life-changing, that unlock students’ curiosity and creativity, and that involve international peer engagement encouraging students to challenge preconceived notions and embedded stereotypes. In this series, Pioneer alumni reflect on the transformational nature of their experience conducting research at Pioneer. #PioneerAcademics #Transformation #Research

I want to express my appreciation to the federal government for its investments in Black communities through initiatives like the SBCCI, the Black Philanthropic Endowment Fund, and most notably, the Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP). These programs have been instrumental in driving growth, creating opportunities, and empowering Black entrepreneurs over the past few years. However, with the BEP coming to an end and many funded programs already winding down and some already done, we must consider the risks ahead. The significant gains achieved in the past three years could quickly erode if this growth is not sustained. Without continued support, we risk a major setback for Black-owned businesses and the broader economic progress we’ve worked hard to build. It’s essential that we maintain this momentum and ensure that these businesses have the resources they need to thrive and continue contributing to the Canadian economy. In rural communities, where economic opportunities are often limited, these small businesses provide critical employment, stabilize local economies, and foster innovation. Removing support risks deepening economic divides, especially when these businesses are still recovering from the impacts of recent global disruptions. Now is the time to deepen, not withdraw investments. #EconomicEmpowerment #SupportBlackBusinesses #InclusiveGrowth #SustainedImpact #Entrepreneurship https://lnkd.in/gCNzaUhy

Coming up! Risky Business (3): Bounded rationality - the idea that, despite our efforts to act rationally, the bounds of what we know inevitably constrain our decisions. Instead, uncertainty is part of everyday life: we cannot know everything, and even what we do know is shaped by our education, knowledge and training. (CMCE) On the 23rd May the Centre for Management Consulting Excellence hosts the third in its series of online Next Gen consulting workshops - this time asking the question “As a consultant, can you really be rational in your decision making?” Through this discussion, we want to gain a better sense of the ways in which we look to understand and mitigate against risk, and to take advantage of opportunities, paying particular attention to longer term goals in life and work. It’s a big topic. I’m on the panel this time - couldn’t resist the question! Will you join us? Details below. #insightfulquestions #consultingexcellence
We delighted to announce that our main speaker, Peter Knight, professor of American Studies at the University of Manchester, and panellist, David Booth, FStratPS, Director, IXQ Consulting Limited, will be joined by second panellist Collette Stone MSc MBA Chartered FCIPD, Director of Insights & Options, a Buckinghamshire-based independent management consultancy, focusing on facilitating individuals and teams to find their voice, direction and purpose. Collette's work takes her across the public, private and charity sectors, where she brings a strong diagnostic focus honed as a founder member of the UK civil service’s cross-Whitehall Organisation Design and Development capability. She is also a member of external faculty for Henley Business School as MBA Supervisor, Action Learning Facilitator, Marking Tutor and Learning Coach. When asked to comment on the topic of our upcoming workshop she said: ‘Enjoy the emergent freedom of knowing there are no fully rational answers. We are 'surfing on the edge of chaos' more than ever, and always will be. So, 'rational enough' will do us fine, for now.’ Read more about the workshop and sign up here https://lnkd.in/dY3T_spR #behaviouraleconomics #decisionmaking #emotionaleconomics #imaginedfutures #techfutures #managementconsulting

Social Mobility Advocate | Early Careers Talent | Social Impact | Facilitator | Consultant | Mentor | Trainer
"please insert inspiring motto for the new year" 😅 As I am writing my first post in 2024, I am yet to work through my specific goals for the year ahead. It's a reminder to us all to take the time to reflect on our plans without it feeling like a rat race or a list of endless goals and new habits. In 2024, I will prioritise my well-being, reflect on my passion and value the time I have (and how I use it). For now, here is a round-up of the actions I have taken so far to surround myself with the projects and people that remind me of the impact I want to make: 💫 Facilitated a workshop on behalf of The Switch, guiding 90 students through their future choices and next steps at London Enterprise Academy. 📌 Empowering students with insights from professionals is essential for navigating the myriad of choices ahead - from choosing their GCSE options, to working out if they want to attend university or what their future career should look like - the right question today can help a student make the right choice tomorrow! 💫 Supported Sunnah Trust to deliver an inspiring workshop to 50 young muslims focused on public speaking. And worked with the wider team to identify specific roles for their expansion across London. 📌 Charities are great examples of how individuals are capable of wearing multiple hats and creating a strong community of volunteers. As they scale, teams need to carefully identify and prioritise their needs specifically around people, processes and systems. 💫 Inspiring conversations with Omar DaCosta-Shahid, Kevin Osei, Taz Latif and Maya Welford 📌 In our pursuit for social change, connecting with like-minded individuals is crucial. Learning and growing together, especially from those using their lived experiences, reinforces the importance of community and collective impact. What have been your 'new year' reflections so far? #fridayreflections
