It's hard to believe how fast things are moving... Jon & I are ecstatic to be hiring two full-time salaried positions at our restaurant, Another Broken Egg, which will be opening later this Fall. It's crazy to think we're already at this point in the development- the days have been flying by! We're looking to hire on a General Manager who would be responsible for managing and overseeing daily cafe operations. In addition to this, we'll be bringing on a Kitchen Manager to focus on back-of-house operations and work directly with the GM. We’ll teach you! When I lived in the Chicago area, a local restaurant we frequented had a help wanted ad on their front window. The headline was, We’ll Teach You to Cook. The essence of the posting was that if you came to work for this restaurant, you could start a culinary career and learn how to cook in a commercial kitchen. They didn’t talk about money or benefits, simply that they would provide the skills necessary to build a career. Talking to the owner she relayed that the competition for her hiring profile was steep. She was up against national chains offering far more prestige and benefits. She chose to take a different approach and focus on development as the reason to join her enterprise. Her turnover didn’t improve with the approach, but she said that the majority of her openings were filled by internal referrals who came in with a desire to learn and performed at a higher level as a result. There are many things today’s workers want but I would propose that a role they feel challenged, where they can grow their life and career skills, is high on the list. A manufacturing company that offers English as a second language courses, a sales organization that teaches personal finance and certainly a scratch cooked kitchen that teaches culinary arts are all great examples of low cost but high value benefits. Skill training and development won’t override the need for competitive compensation, but it will build a higher performing team and give an employer an advantage over their competitors.
