🔍 Financial Times takes a closer look at the potential of #greenhydrogen to decarbonize steel manufacturing, with a focus on our portfolio company H2 Green Steel. The Swedish 🇸🇪 company, which we are pleased to support, aims at building the world’s first large-scale #greensteel plant in Boden, with production of 5 million tons annually by 2030. This pioneering project could serve as a blueprint for decarbonizing steelmaking in Europe and beyond. As Henrik Henriksson, chief executive of H2 Green Steel, says: “This is our first project, not our last.” 👉 Steel production is still responsible for 7 to 9% of the world’s annual CO2 emissions, making its #decarbonization crucial to reach #netzero goals. Delighted to be featured in the latest issue of Steel Times International! 📰 In “Technological pathways to decarbonization,” our Tenova HYL colleagues Jorge E. M. and Leonardo Tamez, together with Pablo Duarte, delve into the direct reduction process, currently the most effective route to #decarbonizing our hard-to-abate steel industry. DRI can result in an impressive 50% reduction of CO2 emissions compared to traditional coal-based blast furnace operations. Our innovative #ENERGIRON, a cutting-edge technology developed jointly by Tenova and Danieli, stands out as the most sustainable, flexible, and cost-effective DRI technology on the market, making it a key driver of the green steel transition. Also pleased to see the EU-funded Life H2Reuse project included in the Innovations sector! We’re so proud to be a key partner in this pioneering initiative for #hydrogen recovery and reuse, paving the way for lower emissions, improved energy efficiency, and reduced waste. Partnerships like these are essential to ensuring we meet the emissions targets laid out in the EU Green Deal and help shape a more sustainable industry 👉 https://lnkd.in/dAEfzd6N Read the January/February issue here: https://lnkd.in/dKjFduP7

Did you know steel manufacturing accounts for up to 9 per cent of global carbon emissions? One of the world’s most versatile, low cost, readily available and recyclable metals, around 1.8 billion tonnes of steel is manufactured across the world each year – used in cars, bridges, ships, buildings, food packaging and more. To celebrate Zero Emissions Day (21 Sep), we're shining a spotlight on the Swinburne researchers at the forefront of the green steel revolution. Their industry-led research is driving change towards zero emissions through innovative methods, including the use of magnetite ores, hydrogen, ammonia and renewable electricity to adapt current smelting processes, most of which centre around carbon-rich furnaces.
