Introducing our new private villa project. The Cremyll Street site continues our exploration of the potential of redundant and small pockets of land with difficult constraints. The site is currently an open access surface car park that has been divided up to allow the area facing Cremyll Street to be developed separately. Maintaining access to the existing parking has been a key constraint of the design, leading to the development of a ground floor plan that provides access and storage. The first floor contains two bedrooms, a bathroom and en-suite, with the second floor a large interconnected living/ kitchen/ dining area with external terrace. The organisation of the spaces places services areas to the north of the plan, with bedrooms and shared spaces to the south to benefit from natural daylighting and views across Stonehouse. The materials palette is a precast concrete base with the first and second floors clad in scalloped corten steel panels, set out on a modular 1050 x 1050 grid based on the site parameters. The glazing is electrochromic to preclude the need for blinds and curtains. The interior staircase is glass from first to second floor to draw as much light as possible into the ground floor. Judges' Citation: Sort Trae: Designed to Passivhaus standards, the buildings not only respect their setting but have a minimal impact on it. The ultra-low energy approach uses the thermal mass of the concrete retaining walls and south facing triple-glazed walls to manage internal temperatures and create a comfortable, highly efficient environment. Accessed at the upper level, the two-storey house straddles the level changes across the steeply sloping site. The other element, the single-storey studio space, is nestled into the landscape. Both of these buildings have full height triple-glazed windows facing out over the countryside to exploit the amazing setting while also preserving neighbours’ views across the idyllic surroundings. The main house is designed around a central dry-stone wall with the staircase on one side and housing storage on the other, keeping rooms simple and uncluttered. At the upper, entrance level, either side of the stair sit the two bedrooms with panoramic views. This allows level access to the bedrooms should that be needed in the future. A spacious living room and dining area exuding warmth and comfort. An enticing outdoor swimming pool area adorned with a charming pergola. State-of-the-art and expansive kitchens catering to both practicality and elegance. MATERIALS Given the climatic considerations, the roofing material chosen is either short or long-span aluminum roofing sheets, offering resilience against the region’s frequent and intense rainfall. The walls, a fusion of regular Sand Crete blocks, are meticulously finished with paintings, wood wall paints, and marble wall paints on plastered walls, embodying both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The flooring, designed for enduring public usage, is adorned with vitrified floor tiles, ensuring a seamless blend of durability and aesthetics throughout the building. Spanning eight floors, 7002 AMK’s design focuses on the glass façade, where juxtaposing different shades of glass creates a nuanced interplay of light and shadow that helps break up the monotony of the facade and draw attention to key architectural features.
