Philadelphia, the city of possibility, has been the starting point of all the changes that many of us have experienced growing up. As long as you can see City Hall, you know where to go. However, what do you see when you look at City Hall? As a community, how can we process the changes and improvements that we want to see in our city when our hands are tied by constantly changing laws? Today, a leader discussed the importance of people working together as a team to bring about change. It's time to come together, share ideas, and work towards a common goal. It's increasingly clear that systemic constraints are going to require us to shift what good looks like and how we deliver good in our places. The traditional visions of our future cities and places has largely ignored systemic constraints (certainly in the short term). And how we operationalize a radically just future within those constraints. This collaboration between CIVIC SQUARE and Dark Matter Labs really sought to delve deep into embracing the scale of the challenge, embracing the scale of the constraints, to find a new space of justice. 3 Degree Neighbourhood: bit.ly/Neighbourhood3

According to a recent poll by The Guardian, nearly 80% of scientists involved in the IPCC expect global temperatures to rise to at least 2.5C above preindustrial levels in this century, while almost half anticipate at least 3C. The dream of keeping our planet to 1.5C is slipping away and we are now in a race to mitigate against the worst effects of the #ClimateBreakdown we are seeing across the world. Europe is heating up faster than anywhere else, as evidenced by the April temperatures we just experienced, which was the 11th straight month of record high temperatures. If we want to avoid the catastrophic floods that we are seeing in Brazil, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, we must start taking this seriously, especially in boroughs within historic flooding boundaries, like Lewisham. Dark Matter Labs and CIVIC SQUARE have put together one of the most important pieces of work I have seen in a while. Local Authorities must radically change our approach to retrofit and neighbourhoods if we are to ensure an inclusive and just transition away from fossil fuels, especially in heating. Please share this work, talk to your council's leaders, and let's figure out how we get this done at scale! NEWSFLASH! King County, WA just published its Civic Campus report, a detailed proposal to revitalize and modernize King County's Downtown Seattle campus, spanning seven blocks and eight buildings that house key offices and functions, including executive and legislative branches, courts, and corrections. These facilities currently struggle to provide high-quality services to residents and employees, with many in need of repair and underutilized. Partners in the visioning process that began in 2018 included a diverse community advisory group and a government partners table with representatives from all branches of King County's government, the City of Seattle, Sound Transit, and 4Culture. The Civic Campus report also involved collaborations with the Urban Land Institute’s 2024 Hines Competition and the University of Washington College of Built Environments. (I was honored to play a small role here!) Objectives of the Civic Campus project focus on enhancing accessibility, upgrading facilities, promoting sustainability, and fostering community engagement. The proposed initiative includes renovating existing structures, constructing new buildings, and developing public spaces to support expanded functions and services. 2023 for me is the year of affirmation and inevitability regarding reality. ( INTERURBAN stops Christmas Eve 1934) This way we may roll the clock back on Regional planning initiatives to the fact that DFW is a modern creation of the first age of electrification. The modern era of Texas history began here on July 2nd 1902 with Interurban Service daily from Downtown Ft Worth to Downtown Dallas VIA DOWNTOWN ARLINGTON and the Entertainment District. That service ran on JEFFERSON BLVD. DIVISION. LANCASTER. BLVD. 1 road. 32 miles long. Represents the largest Urban redevelopment opportunity in American and certainly Texas History. This is not a new idea, it was the best idea and the result is what we call the Metroplex. 1 line- 28 miles 2.8 billion. 80% paid for 10 stations TOD around those 10 Mobility hubs within a decade ( using DART Data). 30 billion Development already underway or in pipeline Downtown Dallas. 10 billion Ft Worth - 5 Billion.
