The many economic and social problems caused by the housing shortage are greatly amplified in rural areas. This week is #RuralHousingWeek and, together with our rural partners, Hastoe will be highlighting some of the many reasons why there needs to be a long-term #PlanForHousing. We are calling on all political parties to support our rural coalition’s Rural Housing Manifesto; a blueprint for tackling the acute shortage of affordable housing in rural England. https://lnkd.in/eCGAke52. The disparities between urban and rural housing provision are laid out in this graphic, courtesy of English Rural.

https://lnkd.in/gA24YnKw The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Marcia Fudge, stated affordable housing is in crisis and something needs to be done. She stated that there’s a shortage of affordable housing units, particularly for low-income individuals and families. Restrictive zoning regulations, high construction costs, and limited government funding contributed to this shortage. She, therefore, suggested the government must increase subsidies in affordable housing programs, such as the National Housing Trust Fund, to spur the development of more affordable housing units. However, these subsidies are the very reason why there is a crisis in the affordable housing market, a market created by the federal government. She proposes political solutions to an economic problem, which only exacerbates the problem rather than solving it. The solution to the affordable housing crisis is surely to increase supply; not through more subsidization but through market-oriented solutions. Thus, to answer the question about who is to blame for the affordable housing crisis, it is quite easy. The one to use political solutions to economic problems is the one to exacerbate the problem, and only government holds the power to use political solutions, which are ineffective at solving economic issues. Government is responsible for this crisis, precisely the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Given the announcement of a general election on 4 July, Hastoe is renewing its call for all political parties to support a ‘Rural Housing Manifesto’. The Manifesto is supported by a coalition of rural partners and provides a comprehensive blueprint for tackling the acute shortage of affordable housing in rural England. The provision of more rural affordable housing would also start to address the social and economic disadvantage that rural communities face compared to urban areas. #rural #ruralcommunities #ruralhousing https://lnkd.in/ef_5cjVx
