"The phone app notes how fast I go, and how sharply I brake or turn corners, delivering a cute homily at the end of each journey: “Awesome! Keep up the good driving,” it exclaims, with a digital shower of confetti." This article is a useful reminder of the impact that huge increases in #insurance cost are having in access to personal mobility - particularly amongst younger, more economically disadvantaged cohorts. I remember the first iteration of "black boxes" back in the noughties being hailed as game changers for #roadsafety amongst #transportplanners. There was even prospect of them becoming a gateway to a form of #roadusercharging. That new dawn didn't seem to materialise then, but perhaps it needed personal mobile phone tech to mature a bit more, and the cost advantage of adopting this kit (and therefore form of surveillance) to increase. Be very interested to know about trends in take up of monitoring equipment like this in recent years, if anyone has seen that data.

America's safest and riskiest drivers: Where does your city and state rank? Honolulu has the safest drivers in America while Albuquerque, New Mexico has the riskiest, according to a new report from insurer Allstate. USA TODAY got an exclusive early look at the study by Allstate. The insurer in its 16th annual Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report ranks the 100 most populus U.S. urban areas by driving behavior, such as phone handling, high-speed driving and hard braking. For the first time, Allstate used anonymized connected driving data from Allstate’s mobility data and analytics partner Arity for the rankings.
