This morning, amid 8 or so panels crammed into the plenary time, we heard from Catherine Coleman Flowers, Dr. Jalonne L. White-Newsome, and Rachel Ramirez on #environmentaljustice. To elevate a few of their most compelling points: 1. "Fifteen minutes is not enough to cover all of environmental justice." Yes - let's #sharethestage, CEOs! 2. "Our economic paradigms encourage [community dividing] injustice... infrastructure bypasses marginalized communities who are so close but don't have" the access and accountability that many of us are privileged to have. How can we ensure critical services like energy access, clean water and functional sanitation, and fresh food make it to ALL communities? 3. We are "ignoring communities that are poor, ignoring #immigrant communities, ignoring #rural communities, anyone THEY think doesn't think have a voice." Meanwhile, the #trauma of #climatedisasters creates a lasting fear in these communities when they experience, for instance, 5 floods in 2 years. Equity of access and equity of accountability matter. @ Aspen Ideas Climate Miami Beach Convention Center
We’re headed to Aspen Ideas Climate with a group of 27 exceptional climate leaders from across Minnesota! National conferences like this tend to lack representation of the many forms of climate leadership that take place at the community level. We believe there’s power in bringing more voices to the table, and we can’t wait to see what the coming days will bring! #AspenIdeasClimate

I just concluded the 8 weeks course with Climate Interactive. The course is around using the En-Roads model to facilitate workshops and simulations around the climate challenges that we face. The purpose of En-Roads is to build decisionmaker understanding of the dynamics of the climate system as a means to effective actions. We make use of the En-Roads model during our leadership workshops that help to reflect on the actions organisations can take to be prepared for a climate neutral future. En-Roads has been build and finetuned by Climate Interactive & MIT Sloan during the last 30 years and is constantly updated.

Congratulations Paul Holthus on this outstanding achievement of founding and developing the World Ocean Council over 15 years into the organisation it is today. For those of you who do not know, amongst his many achievements Paul played a key role in the early development of the mCDR (marine carbon dioxide removal) industry as one of the early visionaries. In 2007, over a decade before the notion of mCDR as an industry, Paul was researching the London Convention before he started engaging businesses, scientists and policy researchers involved in ocean restoration, early negative emission technology ideas and the blue carbon economy. By 2012, Paul was discussing the initial concept of an mCDR business community. In these early years, under Paul’s leadership the WOC participated in the Convention on Biodiversity and various Conferences of the Parties before developing the Ocean/Blue Carbon Working Group concept. By 2017, Paul was convening and assisting the early pioneers who were developing ocean-based CDR solutions. At this stage, there was no demand or market for carbon removals. At COP26 in Glasgow in 2020, Paul was invited to host a discussion on the formation of an ocean-based carbon dioxide removal industry where I recall joining the panel alongside Shaun Fitzgerald. It was at this COP, that a promise was made by over 450 financial by over 450 financial institutions to align their goals with net-zero emissions by 2050. These net-zero commitments started to create the demand signals from industry for carbon removals. By 2021, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels had reached historically unprecedent levels, higher than at any time in the past 800,000 years. In December of that year, the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) in the US issued a report, “A Research Strategy for Ocean Carbon Dioxide Removal and Sequestration”. This report, which provides an assessment of the potential of ocean-based CO2 removal technologies highlighting the level of research funding required, can be regarded as a pivotal moment in the emergence of the industry. Following this report, interest in the field of mCDR started to accelerate at pace. We hope that you will join us at the World Ocean Council Sustainable Ocean And Blue Fin Summit - https://lnkd.in/ej77TiVJ - in Barcelona 5-7 November 2024 to hear more about the state of the mCDR industry today and for those of you who have worked with Paul over the years be in attendance to raise a glass or two and meet Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, WEDG who will be taking over the reins at the end of the summit.
