We are continuing restoration work to rebuild portions of the electric system in Lahaina to ensure safe and reliable power to all West Maui customers. After losing a substation in West Maui, we were fortunate to have two mobile substations that were deployed to begin repowering the area. By late August 2023, customers in Lahainaluna, Puamana, and Launiupoko to Olowalu area were being served by two temporary mobile substations that were installed by our crews as part of the immediate restoration efforts in the area. In January 2024, undergrounding and installation of a new transformer at the Lahainaluna Substation was completed, enabling for the removal of one of the temporary mobile substations. Emily Smith, acting principal engineer of substation engineering on Maui, walks us through the process of deploying a mobile substation.

Enhar would like to congratulate lead Commercial systems design engineer Roger Mansfield for completing his 100th commercial power system. 🎉 To celebrate, Roger has shared some key takeaways from his experience working on these projects. ✅ Each Supply Authority is different: To expedite applications requires a thorough knowledge of the quirks of each Supply Authority. ✅ Gather information: To expedite applications requires accurate information on existing infrastructure and proposed infrastructure. ✅ Communicate: There are many stages to go through in an application including design, pre- approval, approval to build, commissioning, approval to generate. Each stage requires good communication with stakeholders to ensure the project stays on track. ✅ Keep ahead of trends: For example on October 25th 2023 a remote disconnection capability for systems >200kVA became mandatory. For United Energy and Powercor/Citipower this means Generation Monitor Meters (GMMs). This adds significant cost and time to projects of this size. ✅ Flexibility of design: Our clients want to balance maximising yield with minimising cost and achieving compliance. Keeping these three aims in balance requires careful design. If you're installing a commercial power system, Roger has a proven track record and can help you navigate all stages of the project - from feasibility through to design and implementation. Reach out to Roger directly through LinkedIn to start the conversation. Case study: https://lnkd.in/gphA8nAF

Despite the best efforts of senior management in any large organization, different functions often become “siloed” or isolated from each other. Electric utilities are not exempt from this dynamic. Tangibl recognized this situation when faced with an assignment to plan and design the replacement of metal-clad switchgear at a client’s distribution substation. After the client’s regional organization made us aware of the significant outside-the-fence distribution circuit rearrangement required to fully enable this upgrade, Tangibl’s engineering team worked with both client organizations to proactively facilitate communications and planning for the work. Tangibl’s experience with both types of infrastructure, inside and outside the substation fence, and the initiative we took to enable the necessary dialogue between central and regional organizations, helped make this project successful. #EngineeringExcellence #UtilityInnovation #Tangibl

Every major infrastructure project has its specific issues and challenges. But a common challenge for all, and what generally does result, is the project running late and over budget. When starting the WestConnex M4-M5 Link Tunnels project, the team identified several major challenges: • How do we ensure everyone goes home safely every day? • How do we finish on time and on budget? • What do we do with 8.7 million tonnes of spoil? • How do we secure concrete delivery? • How do we achieve the integration works – with the M4 and M8 being already operational motorways? • How can Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) work be carried out at the same time as excavation? The project’s answer to these challenges? Building a project starting with the end in mind. The WestConnex M4-M5 Link Tunnels project (by Acciona Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture) earned notable recognition last year as a finalist in the prestigious Australian Construction Achievement Award #ACAA. Prysmian Group Finland has awarded a contract to YIT - Urban developer and construction companyUrban developer and construction company, the biggest development and construction business in Finland, for the construction and extension of a warehouse at the company's submarine cable production plant located in Kirkkonummi. The contract will be included in YIT's order book for the second quarter of 2024, with an approximate value of €35 million ($37.51 million). To significantly boost the production capacity of 525 kV HVDC submarine cable systems, Prysmian announced in June 2023 that it would allocate around €120 million at the Pikkala factory. According to the company, this most recent investment is a reaction to the rising need for power cables—both on land and underwater—caused by the energy shift and associated technologies. An examination of the requirements for substation design can illustrate the advantages of making improvements to substations. Because such design elements result in direct savings in money, it is important to highlight that cost, dependability, operational flexibility, and environmental effect give the greatest possibilities to enhance the design in order to get the largest returns on investment. This is because improving the design in these areas results in the most opportunities. Read more https://lnkd.in/d76WxD2h

Most stories about the challenges of urban substation engineering revolve around new-build projects to upgrade power delivery infrastructure where space is at a premium. Technologies that maximize available space, such as Gas-Insulated Line (GIL) and completely Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS), have become more widely accepted in North America. What you don’t hear much about, on the other hand, are those existing urban stations, mostly air-insulated, that require a major component replacement. As often as not, the replacement component, well, isn’t exactly like the original. Tangibl was faced with just such a situation when one of our electric utility clients had to replace a transformer in a substation that was located inside an office building, downtown in a major eastern U.S. city. At another of this client’s urban substations, the high-side supply had to be converted from 34.5kV to 69kV. While not as splashy a set of projects as a brand-new GIL or GIS project, both efforts required creativity and field smarts. Learn more about how creative Tangibl can be and contact us to find out how we can do the same for you. #Tangibl #TransformerReplacement #ElectricUtility #PowerDelivery #UrbanSubstationEngineering #SubstationTechnology
