Is it time to end the battle between battery and fuel-cell vehicles, and unite these clean energy sources in the mission for automotive decarbonisation? As the world grapples with the global scarcity of resources, leading circular materials technology company Umicore suggests that integrating battery and fuel-cell vehicles is the key to achieving 100% decarbonisation. While batteries store and use energy, fuel cells generate power by converting available fuel, making them a continuous source of energy. Umicore emphasises the hybrid potential, stating, "Both technologies will have their place as a hybrid solution." I found Tesla's 2022 Impact Report a great improvement over its previous Impact Reports. It shows the company's impressive progress in sustainability while also highlighting areas for continued improvement. On the positive side, Tesla is leading the auto industry's transition to electric vehicles. In 2022 alone, they produced over 1.3 million EVs, avoiding approximately 13.4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions. Their goal is to build 20 million EVs per year by 2030. Tesla is also rapidly deploying energy storage solutions to enable more renewable energy on the grid. However, there is still room for Tesla to reduce its manufacturing emissions and supply chain impacts. Battery production accounts for 27% of Tesla's overall emissions, so continuing to improve energy efficiency and use of renewables in manufacturing will be key. While Tesla is directly sourcing more battery materials, tracing emissions back to the mining stage remains challenging. Overall, the progress is encouraging, and it's clear that sustainability is core to Tesla's mission. Other automakers should follow their lead in accelerating the EV transition. 𝐎𝐫 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝? 🤔 In 2024, we've seen a noticeable slowdown in the EV and Battery industry, sparking debates on whether this movement is just another buzz a fleeting trend or a substantial shift in mobility. The rollercoaster of highs and lows has left many wonderings: Is the EV revolution truly here to stay?   Despite the current dip and volatility, I believe the change is here to stay. This is because there is significant the room for improvement that is yet to come. We're standing on the brink of monumental growth, not just within the EV sector, but across the entire ecosystem of supporting industries—materials, recycling, manufacturing, and more. These advancements are the fuel that will drive the mass adoption of EVs and clean energy solutions.   I recently came across a powerful talk by Tony Seba, where he discussed the sweeping disruptions happening across multiple sectors—not just transportation. The common perception that EVs are merely cars running on cleaner energy is just the tip of the iceberg. The real story lies in how EVs are poised to integrate seamlessly with groundbreaking technologies like 𝑨𝑰, 𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒔, 𝒔𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒚. It's no surprise that all these industries are experiencing explosive growth and disruption, setting the stage for a transformation that will change the way we experience transportation🌐   This shift echoes the industrial revolution when the advent of cars redefined how the world moved the world. Volkswagen Group’s battery company, PowerCo, and QuantumScape have entered into a significant agreement to industrialize QuantumScape’s advanced solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. This partnership will see QuantumScape granting PowerCo a non-exclusive license to mass-produce battery cells using their technology platform, contingent upon satisfactory technical progress and specific royalty payments. PowerCo can manufacture up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually with the option to expand to 80 GWh, enough to power around one million vehicles each year.
