A central theme at the IHI Patient Safety Congress this year was the use of Artificial Intelligence in patient safety. The keynote, “Hope, Hype, and Perils of AI: What does it mean for Safety” given by Kaveh Shojania, Nasim Afsar, MD MBA MHM, and @Beth Daley Ullem was particularly pertinent to me and the work our team has done incorporating AI in our improvement tools.     I find AI, much like other advancements, can be a double-edged sword for patient safety and risk management.  Innovative analytics can make our processes more efficient and detect patterns the human eye alone cannot see; however, it requires a thoughtful approach to safeguard against introducing new risks to the organization and challenges to already burdened healthcare environments.    We need to thoughtfully consider how the workflows impact both caregivers and patients and design new workflows in an inclusive and meaningful way.    Healthcare workers are already inundated with information and experience alert fatigue.  These tools should reduce the cognitive burden of users, not add to it.      Lastly, as healthcare is constantly evolving, we need to create analytic models that maintain relevance and accuracy over time and monitor for unintended risks associated with these advancements.  #patientsafety #IHICongress

There’s no question that artificial intelligence holds great promise for health care.
