Have you ever been mesmerized by the intricate geometric patterns adorning the floors of historic Italian churches? Those stunning mosaics are a unique art form called cosmatesque, flourishing during the Middle Ages. Crafted from colored marble and glass tesserae (tiny tiles), cosmatesque mosaics weren't just beautiful – they were also incredibly durable, perfect for high-traffic areas. The geometric designs, often incorporating swirling roundels and key frets, added a touch of elegance and sophistication to religious buildings. ️ Developed by the Cosmati family of artisans in Rome (hence the name!). Employed a technique called "opus sectile," meaning "cut work." Primarily used for church floors, but also adorned pulpits, walls, and other features. Cosmatesque mosaics are an epitome to the enduring power of art and craftsmanship. Their intricate beauty continues to inspire artists and architects today. Have you encountered cosmatesque mosaics in your travels? #cosmatesque #mosaicart #italianart #history #architecture Picture: San Marco Basilica - Venice (Italy)

See details for the whole story abt this Gargoyle series
John Taylor Arms produced a total of fourteen etchings for a series he titled the "Gargoyle Series." They were done between 1920 and 1947. The Annex Galleries acquired a complete set of this series from the estate of a client. Our efforts to sell the complete series proved fruitless so we began offering them individually. We have put together this flip-book for those who are interested in seeing the full series. The images still available for purchase will link to the item on our website where more information can be found: https://lnkd.in/dN3Qmrxs J. T. Arms was fascinated by what he termed the Gothic Spirit in early Gothic architecture. One of his focuses was on the elaborate waterspouts on the cathedrals, carved in the shapes of "gargoyles". In 1920 he began a series of 14 prints featuring various gargoyles of the French cathedrals. It is reported that he would climb out to the facade to a building in order to get what he felt was the best angle for an etching. Gargoyles, decorative water spouts employed to drain water from rooftops, were designed in the forms of fanciful animals or figures and projected out from the walls of the cathedral. John Taylor Arms was also a trained architect who felt very deeply that man's greatest achievements in architecture are evidenced in the cathedrals and churches from the Gothic era.

TIMELESS, ELEGANCE: The Fusion of Gothic Art and Modern Aesthetics This artwork beautifully captures the essence of a Gothic-style window, a hallmark of medieval architecture known for its pointed arches and intricate tracery. The design of the window is emblematic of the architectural innovations during the Gothic period, which spanned from the 12th to the 16th centuries in Europe. These windows were a significant feature of Gothic cathedrals and churches, allowing natural light to illuminate the interiors with vibrant colors from the stained glass. The stained glass itself is not only an artistic element but also served a didactic purpose, often depicting biblical stories and saints, thus educating and inspiring the largely illiterate populace of the time. The vibrant colors and complex designs reflect the high level of craftsmanship and artistic achievement of Gothic artisans. In this artwork, the addition of a modern splash effect introduces a contemporary twist, blending the historical with the modern. This approach highlights the timelessness of Gothic artistry while inviting viewers to appreciate its beauty and significance in a new light. The use of watercolor techniques further enhances the ethereal quality of the stained glass, creating a sense of movement and vitality that brings the historical elements into a present-day context. #GothicArt #MedievalArchitecture #StainedGlass #ArtHistory #TimelessBeauty
