The Grade II* listed Manchester Jewish Museum, originally built in 1874 as a Spanish and Portuguese synagogue, stands as a testament to the rich cultural diversity of its Manchester neighbourhood. In 2023, we had the pleasure of visiting this incredible site with a group of members and non-members. Our guided tour delved into the fascinating history of the synagogue, its surrounding area, and the treasures within its collection. We also learned about the recent conservation work and refurbishment that has breathed new life into this important heritage site. A truly unforgettable experience celebrating the intersection of history, culture, and community! #ManchesterJewishMuseum #Heritage #HistoricBuildings #EverydayHeritage #HiddenGems

Founded on this day in 1759, The British Museum indeed holds a vast and significant collection of artefacts worldwide, including controversial items like the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone. The debate over whether such artefacts should be returned to their countries of origin is complex and contentious. "On one side, supporters of repatriation argue that these artefacts were often taken during periods of colonialism or occupation and should be returned as a matter of justice and respect for cultural heritage. Returning them would also allow countries to reclaim important pieces of their history and identity." On the other hand, museums like the British Museum argue that they serve as global repositories and provide valuable educational opportunities for people worldwide. They often cite preservation and access to an international audience as reasons for keeping these artefacts in their collections. The issue involves considerations of historical context, legal ownership, ethical responsibilities, and the practicalities of preserving and displaying these artefacts. It's a topic that sparks passionate debate and doesn't have a straightforward answer. As for my personal experience, I haven't visited the British Museum myself, but I understand its importance in preserving and showcasing cultural artefacts from various civilizations. What's your take on this issue, should we return artefacts and antiquities to their countries of origin? #ancientegypt #ancientgreece #antiques #artifacts #bloomsbury #britishhistory #britishmuseum #egypt #greece #historyfacts #london #marble #museum #rosetta #sloanesquare #specimens

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. ATTN NASHVILLIANS WHO WANT TO ACTIVELY SHAPE OUR FUTURE… are you also controlling the past?? Are you controlling your present?? If you haven’t already signed up, this is an incredibly powerful way to take this moment in time to directly impact the way we move in the future… to combat the censorship and revisionist history some other (ahem) groups are pushing. Historians know that it’s not just about interrogating the voices we do hear, but also interrogating the cause of absent voices. And asking “If the voice were present, what would it say? How would it impact the story that’s being told?” Too much of history education is already reduced to excerpts and quotes taken out of context, and truly voices are at real risk of erasure. Come hear their stories before they’re lost to history so that we can impact a more thoughtful, inclusive future. Also Tamyra Gordon MSEd is just really fantastic and you should support her work. 💥

#NewArticle Museographic narrating of dissonant heritage in Tianjin’s former international concessions Maria Gravari-Barbas, Sandra Guinand, Yue Lu & Chensi Shen Concessions—defined as the urban elements built by Western powers while ‘occupying’ various parts of the Chinese territory—have recently been granted heritage status by the Chinese national and local authorities. However, in many respects, they are ‘dissonant’ heritage sites since they are the result of the several-decade-long ‘colonial’ presence in Tianjin of nine foreign powers. The aim of this study is to understand how former international concessions are featured in museums and interpretation centres in present-day Tianjin. https://lnkd.in/e6mdmK5M

🦉 Dead animals, but make it educational. This summer, I explored the big questions around taxidermy in museums in a series of posts—and now, they’re all in one place, just in case you missed it! In my blog, I unpack: 🧠 The ethical debates behind these displays. 📖 How taxidermy shapes the stories we tell in museums. ⚖️ The balance between preservation and exploitation. Curious? See the comments for the link! Taxidermy may seem like a relic of the past, but since I don’t know a single museum in the UK that doesn’t have SOME form of taxidermy on display, the questions it raises are more relevant than ever to modern museum practices. #Museums #Taxidermy #Heritage #MuseumEthics

Scaffolding is an art form all of its own
Here's an interesting fact to finish the week... If all the tubes used in the external and internal scaffolding at our Ipswich Museum site were placed end-to-end, they would cover a distance of over 50,000 feet! That is just short of ten miles....or Ipswich to Felixstowe as the crow flies!
