When the nation was struck in 2019 with a series of tragic events that once again brought to light the injustices of inequities for African-Americans and other minority populations, The Dayton Foundation and community partners ramped up efforts to create a fair and equitable community for all our region’s citizens. From this work grew the Nonprofit Capacity-Building Partnership, a collaborative leadership initiative between the Mathile Family Foundation and The Dayton Foundation. The initiative’s goal is to strengthen local African-American led or majority African-American serving nonprofit organizations to better address inequities in Montgomery County. The first cohort of the Nonprofit Capacity Building Partnership is coming to an end. Nonprofits in the cohort have cited support and gaining new knowledge and skills as just a couple of the benefits of participating in the Partnership over the past two years. However, an unexpected outcome is that these organizations are forming new relationships and beginning to work together outside of the cohort meetings. These new relationships are leading to greater support and service in areas in need throughout our community. One example is this connection between Five Rivers Health Centers and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton, which is bringing new homes to Dayton's Edgemont neighborhood. A year ago this week, Habitat for Humanity International launched #HomeEquals, our global advocacy campaign to increase access to adequate housing in informal settlements. We’ve notched some key wins so far: -         45 policy or systems changes enacted at the local and national level in nine countries -         More than $63 million in government funds accessed for adequate housing development -         And most importantly, more than 3 million people living in informal settlements have improved access to adequate housing We have a long road still ahead of us: Roughly 2.8 billion people worldwide – one in three humans on earth – lack adequate housing, with more than half residing in informal settlements. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join Jennifer Parks on a Habitat for Humanity Chicago (HFHC) neighborhood tour. We explored two neighborhoods, Greater Grand Crossing and West Pullman, that have been significantly impacted by HFHC's initiatives. Serving on the Habitat for Humanity Chicago Board has given me a deeper perspective as it pertains to the impact that the organization has on a quarterly and yearly basis, yet, nothing compares to seeing the tangible outcomes of HFHC’s efforts and discussing its forward-looking vision. This experience left me invigorated and excited about the boundless potential of HFHC. For my contacts in the Chicago area who haven’t yet gotten involved with HFHC, I highly recommend that you consider doing so. HFHC’s strategic neighborhood approach includes four primary components: strengthening the neighborhood housing market, connecting the community, elevating neighborhood appeal, and enhancing the physical environment. These efforts are bolstered by ambitious five-year goals, which include increasing the number of houses built or rehabilitated by fourfold, reaching a total of 100 houses. Additionally, they aim to triple the number of participants in affordable homeownership programs, and double the number of volunteers, aiming for a total of 25,000 over five years. Nonprofits are vital for Toronto’s communities, but they are being squeezed out of their own neighbourhoods by rising rents and lack of space. They need more affordable and long-term access to public spaces in their own neighbourhoods, where they are most needed and effective. But the City’s real estate and development practices are not helping them. They are often excluding or displacing them from community-use space. We need the City to implement three recommendations that will help address the space crisis. The second recommendation is to ensure that all municipal real estate and (re)development practices intentionally seek to expand nonprofit community organizations and grassroots groups’ access to secure and affordable community-use spaces. This includes better community consultation processes and higher standards for assessing community services needs (space, programming) in the area around any development. Revitalising Volunteering Through Community Resilience A few weeks back, my colleague and friend Nick Isherwood with the help of a number of guest speakers held an inspiring session on community resilience and volunteering. Nick's passion for this initiative truly shone through in both his work and presentation. So, what is community resilience? It’s about equipping communities with the skills and capabilities to effectively respond to emergencies when they arise. We often see this in action when a crisis strike's. For example, communities coming together rapidly, transforming village halls and community centres into support hubs. Community resilience focuses on strengthening those connections and providing the resources necessary to enhance the natural responses that often occur during emergencies. Volunteers play a vital role in this process. Whether they choose to engage proactively by helping to create emergency plans and engaging with their community, or re-actively by working with us in assisting setting up evacuation centres or conducting door-to-door outreach in an emergency, their contributions are invaluable. Volunteering not only fosters a sense of purpose and pride but also offers participants the chance to develop skills that enhance their CVs and professional growth. We are thrilled to share the success story of the Greater Riverdale initiative, a transformative community project led by NDC with support from Kaiser Permanente. This case study highlights how community engagement and strategic collaboration have paved the way for a healthier, more connected Greater Riverdale. 🏘️ Greater Riverdale, comprising twelve neighborhoods in Prince George’s County, is celebrated for its diversity, accessible transit, and proximity to D.C. Yet, it also faces areas in need of improvement to enhance community health. This ongoing project was years in the making, and through in-depth community engagement, NDC supported the community in creating a cohesive vision, focusing on areas ranging from safety to schools to future stability. With each neighborhood bringing unique strengths and perspectives, NDC's role was to create a framework that would allow the coalition of partners to move forward effectively. The outcome? A united front of community associations, faith leaders, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, and agency partners working together towards a shared goal. We are proud of the collaborative efforts that have made Greater Riverdale a model for community-driven health initiatives.
